Full Name: Caden Josiah Fowler
Age: 25
Birth: December 5th, 1994
Occupation: Investment Banker
Face claim: William Moseley
Species: Human | Caden is a human with no awareness of supernatural beings.

Parents: Spencer Segal and Candice Fowler
Siblings: Caleb Segal, half-brother, age twenty-six.
Offspring: Caden has a two-year-old daughter, Jo short for Jonah. Whom he had with his first girlfriend. While others may see it as unlucky to have a child so young, it pushed him to graduate from high school early and get into the college he wanted. He sees his daughter every weekend. While he isn’t together with the mother, they are still very close friends.

Heritage: Caden was raised jointly by two human parents of American heritage,
who gave him a good background in the outdoors and a solid education. He wasn’t aware he had a brother until Caleb came to the ranch when he was eighteen and began asking questions. The two were slow to bond, but left that summer with a mutual respect for one another and a budding friendship, despite the barriers.

Religion: Caden is not religious, but is deeply spiritual and has a great respect for the bigger sense of what happens in the world. However, he does not label his beliefs.

Hobbies: Like his brother, when he isn’t working, Caden enjoys tinkering with electronics, but for him it’s the inside of computers and their software. He’s still in the early stages of getting them to work, but it’s a learning process. As an accountant, he also enjoys playing sudoku to keep his brain sharp.

Likes: The outdoors, logic games, music
Dislikes: long lines, waiting, and being late.
Strengths: Mature, Thoughtful, continued up to the player
Weaknesses: Opinionated, continued up to the player

Character Background:

When Spencer Segal lost his son, he knew that his world would never be the same. The next nine months were a blur of police reports, lawyers, and the back of a beer can. It was a dark time. Finally, with no leads left, the investigators asked him to stop calling. The case was cold. If he wanted to get international authorities involved, it would cost money, and it was taking all that the young rancher had to keep himself and his family business afloat. He woke up, fed his animals, and went to sleep with a picture of his two year old clutched in his hand. To him, the name Adalie was a dark spot in his heart and he couldn’t understand how the woman that he loved could take away the one thing that he’d ever loved more: their child. The one bright spot in those few months was the daughter of a detective who continued to investigate. She often came with her father when he visited the ranch and despite how closed off Spencer had become, he developed a soft spot for Candice Fowler.

As it turned out, Candice didn’t just visit the ranch because she was interested in the mystery, but because she saw something in Spencer and his wild hope for his son’s return. She knew that soon she would be leaving for college out east, but during that summer, she enjoyed the long conversations that she had with him about everything from the existential to the material. One of those nights and a few drinks turned into something that neither one of them expected, but didn’t mind the next morning. Good friends sometimes make the best lovers. Still, Candice knew that she had to leave for school. There was no way that her parents would let her stay in Texas and not explore the world. So, she packed her bags and flew to Boston and attended Suffolk University. Only eight weeks into her first semester, she realized that she was pregnant.

Knowing how much her parents would disapprove, Candice did her best to hide her pregnancy all the way into her third trimester. She wore baggy clothing, declined to have her parents visit, and had friends research the best adoption agencies. Everything was in place for her parents to never know about Caden’s existence. However, 32 weeks into her pregnancy, in the middle of a civil procedure class, Candice felt severe pain stretch across her stomach. Knowing she needed the grade, she tried to ignore it for the first thirty minutes, until the professor noted her pale face. She always sat in the front row of his class. Only moments later, lights started fading out, and the sounds of an ambulance were the last thing she remembered.

The next twenty-four hours almost guaranteed that Candice would never have to give away her baby. She experienced a placental abruption and both of them almost died. It was only in the hospital that her parents were called as emergency contacts. The next week was filled with her being in and out of consciousness, but in the background she could hear her parents fighting over whether or not to sign away her baby boy. They chose against it and Caden Fowler joined the family under strict conditions.

Caden was raised by his grandparents for the first eight years of his life while his mother finished college and her law degree. It was a strict upbringing filled with lessons, tutors, and monitored playtime. Truthfully, they never forgave their daughter for her summer fling and took it out on her child as frequently, yet invisibly as possible. Still, Caden became as rough and tumble as he could given the scenario and had a nose for trouble. He was opinionated, like his mother, but had an eye for the creative like his father. His grandparents struggled to force him into a mold as his teen years approached. As the saying goes, the stricter the rules, the sneakier the child.

His relationship with his mother remained close over the years, although in elementary school he finally asked the dreaded question. Who was his father? Why wasn’t he around? Candice balked at first, but knew it would only hurt even more later down the road if she didn’t share the belated news with Spencer. That phone call was perhaps the most stressful of her life. She knew that she’d taken something from him by not sharing the first nine years of Caden’s life with him -- especially after what had happened to Caleb.

Caden and Spencer met in a diner in Fredericksburg on his tenth birthday. There was cake, presents, and better yet, for the first time...there was his Dad. After that, there was a shared custody arrangement that Candice’s parents never let her forget. Despite Henry Fowler’s initial fondness for Spencer, he was even fonder of holding grudges and couldn’t let go of the fact that somehow, he believed that the rancher was the one person who had held his daughter back. Still, young Caden thrived in his summers on the ranch, possibly even more so than his days back in Boston. It was beginning to be hard living under the control of his elders.

Caden became an expert at leaving no trace of his house parties with highschool friends. Wine bottles which had been used were diffused with grape juice to make them look full again and carpet cleaners covered vodka vomit stains. To him, it was as much a game as anything else and the logic and chess classes that the Fowlers sent him to only made it easier to hide the evidence. It wasn’t necessarily that he disliked the path they’d set out for him. He knew that they were only trying to give him the kind of life that would provide for him in a way that the small town detective had never been able to provide for himself; but, suddenly, he understood why Candice had been a bit of a rebel herself.

At age eighteen, he met his first girlfriend. While, she wasn’t the most beautiful, she was smart and could tell him anything he wanted to know about the most random things. To him, that lit his heart on fire to explore new places. He longed to get out of Boston. They made plans to travel, but were slowed down unexpectedly. It came in the form of a bump. Sometimes, children repeat their parent’s mistakes. Caden fell into the same one Candice had and he and his girlfriend became parents at the young age of nineteen and seventeen. Initially overwhelmed by not his family’s disapproval and his mother’s disappointment, it was his first instinct to run. The first place he ended up was on Spencer’s front porch.

It took thirty-six hours for Spencer to calm his son from panic to alarm, from dread to cold feet, from cold feet to anxiety, from anxiety to apprehension, from apprehension to understanding. Caden returned home to a worried parent, a crying girlfriend, and frustrated grandparents: however, he returned with more surety of self than when he left.

Becoming a father propelled Caden into his future and despite that it wasn’t his passion, he took his grandfather’s advice and studied finance in college because he was good at it and it would present him with a future that was secure. It wasn’t only about him now. He had a daughter and that was something he needed to consider in every choice he made. Very often, Caden still spent summers at the ranch, only now, he brought his daughter with him. He had custody in the summer and it seemed like there was no better place for her to experience them than next to her grandfather, Spencer Segal, who had softened with age.

It was a warm day in mid July when the ranch changed for good. Caden, and Spencer were fly fishing next to the pond while the toddler napped when a familiar stranger wandered through the gate on a motorbike. The noise made all the cows complain and Spencer tossed a look at his son. Who was this guy to scare away all the fish? Meeting his brother brought a lot of confusing feelings to the surface for Caden. In one way, he now had to share a parent that he often already felt cheated out of time with and in another, he felt ready to welcome him home. He and Caleb were very different. Caden was bold and adventurous and Caleb was quiet and liked to study. However, they found common interests in (Caden’s daughter, Caleb’s niece) and taking long hikes.

Caden didn’t hear from his brother much after he left the ranch, apart from a few post cards that came from Evermore, Colorado. He always saved them on the fridge and sent back pictures of the family. It was two years later over a phone call repeated many times at 2:22 AM that he finally heard his brother’s voice over the phone. It sounded even more French when sleepy, but at the time, Caden couldn’t care less. Something had happened to (daughter’s name). From the postcards that Caleb had sent, Caden could tell that Evermore was not a normal city. It was unique. Perhaps, if he brought (daughter’s name) there she could get the help that she needed. She could be healed from her sudden affliction. The summer was almost over, but disregarding his custody agreement, he made the journey and began searching out his brother. Perhaps, here there would be someone with answers.
