Aviana grew up in France with her little sister, Bryn, by her side. Their parents had died in a house fire when Aviana was only 7 years old. The pair grew up in the system in France, moving from home to home. Taking care of her little sister, she noticed that they shared the same markings across their shoulder blades. The similar lines extended across their shoulders and resembled that of scars but were black in color instead of their usual dark pink. Standing in the bathroom of a night, Aviana eyed the markings, wondering what they were. Birthmarks maybe?
When Aviana was 18 years old, her sister 10, their foster father at the time was an alcoholic. Usually the pair knew how to handle it, but this time it got way too out of hand. Their father was lashing out and out of control. Aviana tried to calm him down but that only resulted in her being slashed down the side of her abdomen, creating a scar that she would have forever. Their fathers anger was centred on Bryn, a smashed bottle neck being held to the 10 year olds throat. “Daniel, stop,” Aviana tried to reason with him, a small tear running down Bryn’s cheek, “You’ll regret this,” Aviana calmly spoke to him. This was all to no avail, the sharp shards of glass edging the bottle neck sliced into her sister’s jugular, trails of blood running down her porcelain skin.
Aviana willed to see her father in pain, willed for him to see what pain he had inflicted on her. Bryn was her only blood family member left, now she was all alone. Tears rushing down her cheeks she closed her eyes and pictured her father in pain, his skin burning, blood curdling. She wanted to see him in pain for once, not her. All of a sudden she heard cries of pain coming from her father, flicking her eyes open she saw her father collapse to the floor, hands to his temples screaming in pain. Shocked, Aviana rushed up to her small bedroom which she had shared with her sister, shoving anything she could find into a medium sized duffel bag that she had kept hidden for occasions like this. She wrapped small ornaments and photos of her and her sister into clothing to keep them from breaking and packed it so tight with clothes, she could barely do up the zipper. Aviana had always known she was different, but not that different. She snuck downstairs, avoiding eye contact with her father who was collapsed on the floor. Quietly moving to the bar, she ruffled around, finding her fathers wallet in the drawer below the white rum, where he kept it when he was drinking.
Running out the door, slamming it behind herself, she managed to control the tears, hailing a taxi cab driving down the street. She flicked through her fathers wallet, noticing a fair amount of cash and a small piece of paper which had his credit card pin on it (he was always very forgetful). She slid into the cab and tossed her bag beside her, “Aéroport , se il vous plaît,” she said to the cab driver. Airport. She was getting out of this country.
Arriving at the airport, Aviana purchased a ticket to Colorado in America, hoping to find a large city with a lot of people so she could blend in. As her plane was boarding in a few hours time, Aviana took the opportunity to research the place on her laptop. She found a big city called Evermore on the edge of a map of Colorado. With a quick google search Aviana found that the place was rumoured to have supernatural beings living in the town, “Maybe there’ll be someone like me,” she joked to herself before boarding the long flight to America.
Arriving in the new country, she checked through customs and collected her bag before heading to the cab rank just outside the airport. Hopping into an empty cab, she asked the driver to take her to the city, she would find her own way from there. The driver nodded and proceeded into the packed city of Colorado. There was people everywhere, bustling in and out of shops and down crowded sidewalks. She plugged her headphones into her ears and set a Panic! At the Disco album to play on shuffle. She watched the city move around her, the traffic not that bad for what she believed was peak hour. The taxi finally stopped outside a group of hotels, “Any of these are good,” the driver suggested to her. Aviana nodded before making her way out of the cab and into the foyer of the first hotel she saw. Checking in at the desk, she got a single room with a balcony. Her one bag was ushered to her room as was she. The room was very modern, plush white fabrics adorned the comfort furniture. Aviana collapsed on the bed, her head sinking into the pillow, the doona wrapping around the bottom half of her body. Now all she had to find was a home.
That night as Aviana tried to sleep, something weird fell over her. Her eyes blew open suddenly and her body felt like it had frozen. She attempted at moving her fingers, arms, legs and neck. All of which were still possible. She pulled herself out of bed and turned on the small lamp on the bedside table and stood in front of the floor to ceiling mirror that adorned one of the walls. Her eyes, once a bright shade of blue, had dulled to a more violet tone. Aviana turned so that her back showed in the mirror, she pulled her dark blonde hair over her shoulder and looked at what once were the black lines tracing across her shoulder blades. These lines were shown off perfectly by the spaghetti straps of her tank top. The lines were now white, glowing white almost. She had to get to Evermore.
Grunting, she pulled on some decent clothes and did some of her makeup, not bothering with her hair and just tying it into a top knot. She shoved her belongings into her bag and left $50 on the nightstand before running out the door and onto the streets. Her black leather jacket kept her warm as she headed past all of the shops that had closed signs printed across their front doors. She noticed what seemed to be a stairway down to underground, so she took it. Reaching the bottom, she realised that it was an underground train station, none of which they had in France. She slid her finger down the board of times and saw that a train left platform 1 in 27 minutes for Evermore. Perfect.
Aviana is a control-freak. She is always trying to make things perfect and everything has to be done in a certain way to make her happy. If things aren’t done her way she gets aggravated easily and can become enraged. Aviana is very sentimental and doesn’t like to rid things from her life with the press of a button. She finds reasons to keep things and never to get rid of them. Aviana is an extrovert and goes out of her way to make herself noticed but is also very compulsive and can be persuaded easily, so if she decides to do something, there’s not much stopping her.
Positive: Sentimental - Extrovert - Organised
Negative: Control freak - Compulsive - Neurotic
