It’s the time of year when the nights are staying warmer, only just cooling off enough to be nice to be out in. It’s a nice change from the bitter cold of a couple of months ago, when Miles had to wear a couple layers just to tolerate going out for a walk. He prefers this time of year, being able to go out in a t-shirt and jeans instead of a couple layers of coats. He’d been inside most of the day at work, working an afternoon shift instead of a morning one, but when he’d gotten off he’d decided the night was warm enough to warrant walking home instead of grabbing a cab.

At this hour, the nightlife is really just starting to come alive. Neon signs are lighting up, people are starting to mill about in their clubbing clothes, and the general excited chatter from people out in groups or in pairs are reaching his ears and only growing louder. That’s one thing he can say about a city, is that it never really gets quiet. Back home nothing would be heard except the occasional car and the crickets at this time. Miles finds it’s not so bad either way though, both have their benefits and he’s not the type to get all caught up in which is better. He doesn’t have much purpose to his direction, somewhere along the way deciding the night was too nice to waste going straight home and taking a more meandering path that way so that he can spend more time in the fresh, for a city anyway, air.

As he walks, his feet taking him past a bar that’s been open for a while, he starts to notice something outside the usual din of people on the street. He pauses, head going up and he looks around, trying to find the source of what he was hearing. He catches sight of the disturbance a little bit up the road, a group of people herding someone away from the main road and into an alley, which is always a sign of people just enjoying their night. A frown taking over his previously content expression, Miles heads straight for them. He can hear them before he can see them, male voices jeering and bodies jostling and when he turns the corner he sees that they have a couple of young teenagers backed against the wall. They look like some low life gang, their faces covered, and at first he figured the group of about 9 were just being assholes, likely high on something. Then he sees the glint of a knife in one of their hands.

He doesn’t give them the benefit of a warning, instead immediately going after the person closest to him. He’s socked him in the jaw hard enough to knock him out before any of them even realize they’re being attacked, but at the sound of their buddy hitting the ground like a rag-doll, Miles officially has their attention. “Unless you want to end up in the hospital, I suggest you move on with your night.” As he looks them over, he comes to a very sobering realization. If this is a gang, then it’s not a human one. It looks like there’s a group of supernaturals facing him, a mix of valkyr, therians, and humans staring back angrily at him. Fortunately he’d managed to drop one of the valkyr, but since he hadn’t killed him that means the heap at his feet will be back up before too long. One of them curses at him, the rest joining in with shouts that echo down the alleyway and into the street, before they all rush at him. He’s thankful that his initial guess that most of them are on something seems to be true, because they’re tripping over each other in a way that anyone sober wouldn’t be doing. That’s to his benefit because otherwise he might end up hurt. The first couple that reach him Miles dodges out of the way of, returning their sloppy blows with quick and powerful strikes, not bothering to hold back his strength thanks to the sudden dangerous nature of this encounter. With most of them coming at him from the front though, he doesn’t see the one that managed to get around him.

With Phoenix being the eldest of the three siblings; Elle was barely 11 by the time her brother had truly packed up his bags and left for Russia. His leaving took the heaviest toll on her, with how close they were; but she knew the family issues between him and their brother, and their father drove him away. “You can partially blame Texas, for the unique names.” Knowing her parents wanted to stick with the southern vibe; at least with her and her baby brother’s names. Out of the trio, Elle sounded least southern. Her southern twag only really ever came back, if she was in Dallas. At his teasing quip, Elle shook her head with a light laugh. Maybe she was a little bit of a master, in that aspect. “When you have two brothers, you have got to learn.” Although, she was sure his sister probably used it on him too.

“I have no idea how you do it. I’d be a zombie with that amount of sleep.” The Therian joked, a little wide eyed for emphasis. Hopefully he could improve his sleep schedule at one point or another. As he asked about the French Language, Elle just smiled. Giving him a slight nod. “The French do enjoy their silent vowels. It took me a while to figure that out.” Sometimes she still wasn’t sure what the use for them was, besides the useful spelling. Although he did raise a good point Latin. “Mhh, I am not even sure that anybody even speaks Latin anymore.” If it was, Elle would have added that onto her list of languages, no doubt. It seemed like a fascinating language. “But if I happen to meet someone who speaks Latin, I’ll point them in your direction.” she offered.

“Oh, I tried. Mummy boy didn’t want to listen.” Elle recalled the memory with a light laugh. “Maybe he had some cobwebs stuck in his ears.” She lightly joked. In all honesty, it was a busy and loud Halloween night, so no wonder the kid didn’t hear her for a while. His perfect comment, caused her to feel flattered. Blushing slightly. “Countess Draculina, actually.” Elle corrected teasingly. Countess Dracula, just didn’t have the same ring to it.The way he talked about Christmas with his own family, made the young woman smile. It seemed like his family was much closer to keep enjoying that holiday. “That sounds lovely. Sounds like you guys really get in the festive spirit with the community. As sad as it may sound, I can’t remember the last time, I enjoyed a proper family Christmas.” It was tough to admit, but with family complications...Christmas just wasn’t the same, as when she was growing up. “Looks like you learned from the car incident. That’s all that matters.” As amusing as it was, lessons were learned.

Flashing Miles a warm smile, Elle had to agree. He was the one that was succeeding, rather well. Giving him plenty of points in her book, even though she doesn’t mention it outloud. But it was probably obvious by her reaction. As they left, she gave the waiter a friendly wave. “Always the gentleman.” Elle smiled softly, as he explained his reasoning. Was he too good to be true? It’s been a while, since she’s met such a genuine guy who didn’t mind paying, without even asking. The Evening breeze slightly ruffled through her red locks, as she glanced up at him. A warm smile on her lips. “You’re welcome, Glad I could help.” And if she hadn’t been nearby, they wouldn’t have met. So she guessed it came to something good. “I had a good time too. I needed it.” Elle admitted. Miles had honestly made her night, more than he knew just by keeping her company and making her night a little brighter with the laughs and smiles. “Hopefully, we’ll see more of each other?” Elle couldn’t help but sound and look hopeful. After all, she did promise him to show him photos of her Wonderwoman days.

“So I have Texas to thank for us meeting then? Makes sense.” Of course Oklahoma borders Texas, so he’s been to the Lone Star state several times. It’s interesting that neither of them sound southern or mid-western, which he chalks up to a mixture of factors but is probably in large part due to both of them knowing other languages. That can change your accent pretty majorly. He laughs when she says she had to master it because of having brothers, shaking his head at the deja-vu. “You sounded just like my sister right then. Of course the puppy eyes with her didn’t work on me as often as she wanted them to… but they did sometimes.” He’s not one to lie, sometimes she very much got her way due to that innocent act, but he always knew when to put his foot down. Thankfully she always respected that… well, almost always.

“Coffee. Lots of coffee. At this point I’m pretty sure I have coffee for blood.” He practically lives on it, which he knows isn’t exactly good for him but when one has the schedule he does it’s basically a necessity. Maybe someday he’ll get enough sleep, he doesn’t see that happening so long as all this mess in Evermore continues though. It’s funny to him that apparently the old jokes are accurate but beyond an amused seeming nod he doesn’t comment on it further. “Unfortunately they don’t. At least not natively. Latin died out with the Roman Empire and turned into all the romance languages, so it’s officially a dead language. If you do find someone who happens to speak it, please do point them to me though.” Well he just showed a bit of his inner geek but whatever. He suspects she figured it out before now.

“Either that or he was on a candy high.” Too much candy severely deteriorates a kid’s ability to listen and that’s saying something since the average kid’s attention span is approximately 15 seconds in his experience. “Ahh, Countess Draculina, forgive me,” he inclines his head to her respectfully. It is cute. “We always did. But now that both your brothers are in the city couldn’t you all have a big Christmas celebration together? I know it wouldn’t be the same as when you were kids, but it’s a good time to start new traditions right?” He knows that eventually he won’t be able to go back home for Christmas but until that time comes, he’s happy to continue in their established traditions. So long as they don’t kick him out for being a moron, which is fairly likely he knows.

Miles rolls his eyes at his friend as he waves back to Elle, silently teasing him though it seems to be an inside joke between the two of them. “I don’t know about that, it just seems like the polite thing to do you know?” The breeze feels amazing this time of night, making him glad that he had the presence of mind not to wear a coat. “Well, I’m always happy to entertain. Of course we will. I could never leave my vigilante partner to clean up messes on her own, now could I?” His smile is warm as he reaches into his pocket to pull out his phone. “In fact, if you don’t mind, I could give you my number? That way you can send me those invisible jet pictures you told me about. Or let me know if you see any more trash that needs to be taken out like earlier.”

Thanking Texas, now that seemed quite the compliment. Elle smiled. “If you want to send a welcome letter to Dallas, Texas, that’s quite the flattering gesture.” If he hadn’t told her that he came from Oklahoma, Elle wouldn’t have exactly guessed. Miles had seemed to be lacking that accent, just like she lost hers for the most part. A light laugh escaped her, as he called her out for sounding like his sister. “Don’t all sisters sound like that?” Elle questioned. “I would have thought, being your baby sister, she’d have you wrapped around her finger.” But it seemed like he was a bit more firmer and didn’t get swayed that easily.

Elle laughed, at the coffee for blood comment; shaking her head. “I am not sure that’s possible.” That sounded very unlikely. Elle had a liking for coffee too, but maybe she had a less of an addiction to it, unlike him. “Besides, I saw you bleeding blood...not coffee.” she reminded him about the head injury earlier. The thought of bleeding coffee, sounded like something from a comedic horror film. Miles' knowledge about Latin dying out, wasn’t something that a lot of people knew, unless they took interest in history and languages. “It’s sad really, seems like a fascinating language to learn.” She loved how excitable he was, when it came to sending him a latin tutor, if she ever knew someone that spoke the language. His Geeky side was cute.

“Mhh, that’s a high possibility.” Elle nodded in agreement. But whatever it was, the young kid had been distracted. But then again, if she was focused on candy hunting herself, she probably wouldn’t pay much attention either. Kids. “Trust me, trying to get those two to be in the same room, as adults has proven to be a challenge and a half.” But Elle, was always a bit sneaky about trying to get her two brothers in the same room together, to try and sort out their differences. But they were both stubborn, stubborn and more stubborn; that it left Elle frustrated. So she wasn’t sure how to even plan Christmas, now that they all lived in Evermore.

“As true as that may be, not everyone has such good manners.” Elle said honestly. So he was definitely on the gentleman list, at least in her books. Of course, he had to dish out those comments, making her smile warmly. “Well, I am always happy to team up with Batman, to help fight crime.” Yep, that was something else that’d stick; especially after the story from his child-hood. “I don’t mind at all.” Elle took out her own phone; which she had kept in the inside pocket of her jacket. After unlocking her phone, she swapped phones with Miles; so they could swap numbers. Punching her phone number into his phone, she saved the contact under Elle. She somehow managed to find a wonderwoman emoji on his phone, sticking that at the end of her contact name. “I think you might enjoy the photos up close in person, but If I can get decent one’s...they should come out pretty good on the phone.” She’d just have to find them and see how the quality would look like, via the phone. But she was certain, more trouble would be lurking in the city, for them to handle. It was Evermore after all. “Thanks for the lovely evening.” Elle smiled at the Nephilim as she handed him his phone back. As the evening was coming to a close, she was slowly realising; that she had just been on a date? With the handsome man in front of her. Making her mind a bit scrambled with so many thoughts.

He nods to her, grinning some. “I will find the appropriate address and send the letter out first thing in the morning.” She knows he’s joking, but if this had been earlier in the night she probably wouldn’t have been too sure. Miles shrugs at her next question, thinking back on all his friends over the years that had sisters. “Depends on how annoying their brothers are I guess. Don’t get me wrong, she could have just about anything she wanted within reason and she always knew I’d be there for her no matter what, but we respected each other a great deal. Probably helps that we trained together from the time we were small so we knew we could kick each other’s ass.” Nephilim training is no joke. They were both coached in fighting and weapons from a young age, it’s the real reason Miles is able to hold his own now against other supernaturals. The Guard just made his training that much better.

“Well you have a point. I suppose that’s a relief, means there’s some hope for my caffeine addicted self yet.” He’d almost forgotten he’d begun this evening bleeding from the head. His healing means he doesn’t even feel a twinge from the wound now, making it quite easy for him to forget it was ever there in the first place. “It is interesting. I’d imagine a Diviner would know a bit about it, most of their spells seem to take from Latin. Makes sense, how else would one classically summon a ghost?” Miles knows a few diviner, a couple of which have no connection to the Guard besides knowing him. It’s good to have outside connections, just in case. You never know who can turn up interesting information and he likes knowing he can have people looking out for non-Guard related business.

Miles takes a minute to think about what she says about her brothers, trying to come up with a solution that might help out. Two brothers that don’t get along well in the same room could spell trouble but if she wants them to get over themselves and get along so badly he’d think they’d at least try for her sake. “Well you could always stage a situation to get them working together. Though they might be mad at you afterwards so maybe not. Jen and I had to do stuff like that a lot when we were younger so… maybe I’m just biased.” It wasn’t until he was older that he realized just how strange other people find that tidbit of information. For them it was standard survival training, learning how best to rescue someone from a bad situation. It was never actually dangerous, even though most people seem to interpret it as involving death traps. It didn’t. His parents weren’t insane.

In a show of old-timey gentlemanly manners, he smiles as he dips in a bow, taking her hand and winking up at her. “The honor was all mine madame. I was going to go a bit more over the top but I figure I’ve probably embarrassed you enough for one night.” With a soft chuckle he releases her hand and straightens back up. He hands over his phone and lightly takes hers from her, quickly typing in his contact information. Naturally he has to find an alien emoji to attach to it. He would’ve gone for a Batman one, but the alien joke was funnier he must admit. When they trade phones back he chuckles at the Wonder Woman attached to her name and pockets his phone. “I’d enjoy seeing them in person. Either way, just let me know.” She’s right about more trouble lurking in the city though, in this town there’s always going to be some sort of trouble to get into. “I feel like I should be the one thanking you, but of course you’re welcome. We’ll have to do this again sometime, but… maybe without all the fighting and bleeding.” He smiles at her. “Have a good rest of your night Elle.” He’s positive that after all this she must be exhausted, they could both use some rest even if the night had been lovely. He seems quite oblivious to her internal conundrum but if he’s being honest, it hasn’t quite sunk in for him yet. Give it a bit and he’ll freak out too, at like 2 am.

The Therian just smiled, at his cute yet flattering joke. “Let me know how that goes.” There was no harm in playing along, with the joke; as she did with his previous one’s. “In my experience, every sister finds their brother annoying, to a certain degree. It just seems to be some sort of sibling law of physics.” Elle shrugged slightly, who knows. Maybe some people didn’t find their elder brother annoying. But it seemed like Miles was close to his sister. Whilst Elle considered herself close to both her brothers; lately it’s been feeling like she and her youngest brother lost that deep bond, they used to have as kids; with him not really being as present in her life and on top of that, the constant family issues. It was hard to say they were a tight-knit family. Elle was barely the glue that was struggling to hold them together; at best and worst. “Seems like, me and your sister would get along great. You might need to be careful, or us girls will double team you.” Elle mused, smiling. Joking, when it came to kicking his ass for some reason. “I’ve heard Nephilims rely on training from an early age.” At least, it was more consistent for him, knowing where he stood. For a long time, Elle wasn’t sure about her own heritage and where she stood; due to it being kept a secret.

“I am a lover of coffee too, so I am not sure if my word on that exactly counts?” Elle pursed her lips in thought.”But for your sake, I’ll say there’s hope left.” Maybe she was just being optimistic? Who knows? Miles did raise an interesting point in Diviners. “Mhh, I didn’t think of that, until you just mentioned it.” Elle didn’t know any Diviners personally herself, most of her connections in the city happened to be different Therians, and few Valkyrs. One of whom was her elder half brother. “But Yeah, I suppose they’d know a lot more about the language, than the rest of us.” So that was one place to start, when it came to Latin.

A light laugh escaped from Elle. “Now, either you’ll be a bad influence on me.” She mused teasingly, but smiled.”Or you think exactly like me.” Elle said in all honesty. “I’ve tried that so many times before, I have to be more sneaky about getting them in the room together; as I think by now, they know me well by now..from previous experiences. Somehow they always end up dragging me into any argument between the two of them.” Honestly, it was exhausting. Dealing/being sucked into their arguments to try and end the hatred. “It feels, like I am the only one that’s trying to fix what’s left of the family and keep us together, and feel no effort on their behalf.” Elle frowned in slight annoyance. As if she didn’t have enough things going on in her life; dealing with her brothers was a full-time job on it’s own.
Elle bit her bottom lip slightly, blushing at the gesture. She rose a slight eyebrow at him. “Oh gosh, as flattering as you have been, I am not sure I could take more comments that’d floor me. Might not recover so quick.” Or maybe she could? “Maybe save it, for another time.” she added playfully. Who knows, he might surprise her with a few more comments later. As he dropped her hand, it fell to her side.As she got her phone back, Elle giggled seeing the Alien Emoji by his name. “That joke really has stuck.” As she put her phone away, she smiled. “I am sure we’ll figure something out, about those Halloween Photos.” Whilst Elle usually cringed at most of her old child-hood photos, there was a rare expectation that she didn’t mind showing people. The rest, she kept hidden. ”I have a feeling, we could stand here for the rest of the evening, thanking each other.” Elle said with a light giggle. As obviously they had their reasons for thanking the other. A light laugh escaped her. “Well, the no fighting and bleeding, might just make it even better. Sounds like a plan.” She smiled softly. Wait...did he just ask me out again? A thought yelled inside of her head, with a mixture of shock and excitement. “Have a good evening, yourself Miles. I’ll see you soon.” With a warm smile and the last of their goodbyes; the two went their ways for the rest of the evening. Not living too far away, as Elle knew the neighborhood, she found herself at her apartment's doorstep sooner than later. Elle’s mind was constantly swimming with thoughts of today. ‘Oh my god, he’s so gorgeous.’ ‘Oh bugger...I can’t believe, I made the cutest alien comment.’ ect ect...yep. Elle found that she might be in trouble. Trouble with the feels. Who wouldn’t fall for the Nephilim? The man was totally her type and suddenly sprung into her life, unexpectedly.
