She was going to kill him.

Her boots resounding in the empty hallway, her eyes blazing with fire, fists curled and lips a thin flat line.... Even the most practical side of her did not offer an argument to the buzzing though of murder as Val stomped her way towards the office. At this moment, she could care less about their cardinal principle of never hurting their own kind if it meant achieving the satisfaction of wringing Scorpios' neck. As if his constant questioning and comments weren't enough, he had to bring disaster right into their midst, almost as a test to see just how far he could push her buttons and he had certainly pushed it far enough today.

From the moment some of her members came with reports of an altercation, she had lost her cool- a emotion he seemed to frequently bring out just with his presence. A choice word here, a superior look there and suddenly she found herself behaving more like a disgruntled competitor than a dignified leader. Sure, there were some tiny moments of admiration for his intelligence and pragmatic approach to life but they were often overpowered with the intense desire to just shake him senseless.

There were days when his antics and words would amuse her to no end but today, blazing red filled her vision. Someone could have been seriously injured and if the reports were to be believed, it did not seem like a civilised fight-the person whoever he was, had come with the intention to destroy. That thought truly worried Valeria. She had heard from Max of times when the city had come to war but so far, since she had been there, things had seemed peaceful but all it took was a single person and the whole faction could be in peril.

Pushing the door open with a bang, her eyes took in his injured form, concern flickering for a moment before being replaced with rage and the fact that he had not really taken pains to patch up simply added fuel to the fire. Stalking purposefully to the side refrigerator, Val took an ice pack and threw it in his direction with a harsh "Explain. Yourself" and came to stand in front of him with her arms crossed.

There were still certain aspects of leadership that, even months later, Valeria did not feel comfortable dealing with. Planning a mission, training new members, handling weapons, weapon history-those felt like the role was made to fit her perfectly but adding to that was the grey area of human emotions and suddenly the strong ground-surface she stood upon completely crumbled. All her life she had never really dealt with people on a personal level, her family was a farcical title with no substance and she never really spoke enough to strike a life-long friend- a thing that had been convenient too with her wanderlust days of youth. Max had been the strange exception and months from their last meeting, she was coming to realise that Evermore too slowly crept up to be included in that category.

“-about to explode. Yes, I’m definitely hot as a volcano then” Val finished his statement with a bland tone, her eyes shutting for a moment and her shoulders strangely relaxing at his words. It was a perplexing realisation that her anger had been more on the anxious side for his well-being rather than an sort of exhibition of defence and power at having her authority undermined. Yes she would have loved to step into the fight and show Giovanni who was the boss and her members that they could always depend on her to avert crisis. But the deed was done and if Scorpios was so relaxed in his stance, it meant that she needn’t bother trying to dig that guy out. He’d have been on his way to wherever he came from, hopefully having learnt a lesson.

But now what was she to do with the guy nonchalantly sitting in front of her?

It was wretched really how he could make her smile even when a moment ago, she had been ready to rip his head off. Her lips twitched for a second at his statement though she composed herself. It wouldn’t do if she gave in that easily but it was utterly embarrassing how the desire to tear him down just left her. These were the times she could hardly understand herself or her own emotions. Most days they were usually pushed to the deepest recesses of her mind, but then there were days like this that wreaked havoc with her usually stoic personality.

She couldn’t give in. It wouldn’t do at all, both for her pride and her position. She had to show her members that certain transgressions would have consequences and despite how she was feeling, she refused to drop her mask. Leaning against her table, Val crossed her arms in an attempt to re-affirm her angry stance and fixed her icy hues on him “So you decide of all times to tell me Now that your family has enemies? I demand that transparency from all my members and it is exactly so that incidents like these do not occur. I do not care that he may never show his face here again, the fact that he has shown it once is proof enough that none of us can take the faction’s security lightly! It could have blown out of proposition!” Her voice had not risen but her words were hard and she stalked away towards the window, her back to him, staring at nothing in particular. Perhaps, Valeria was coming to realise, that she was a perfectionist of sorts and anything out of place felt like a personal failure. Maybe she wasn’t the best ambassador around, maybe she wasn’t cut out for the post but she could only hope to do her best and not make a whole new mess of things.

“I hope you atleast gave him something to remember by, that he wouldn’t dare to show his face here again?” she murmured her inquiry, turning slightly to look at him again, feeling that same strange emotion taking centre-stage of her heart and just not knowing what to do with herself anymore.

Sparks.

Valeria had often secretly scoffed at the over-the-top description her friends used to give her of attraction, followed by a dreamy sigh and worse still, of star-struck eyes. She could remember countless encounters in her days of travelling around, as she sat in a cafe, mindlessly nodding at whatever excitement her friend projected-‘He held my hands and it was like electric sparks were lit up inside me’ they’d say with bright eyes and goofy grins and Val would simply murmur the necessary response, resisting the urge to smack them with a much needed dose of realism.

And here she was now, right in the midst of that realism feeling those blasted sparks.

It were days like these that made her wish she had never set her eyes on the vexation that was Scorpios D’Angelo , that he had gone elsewhere and she could stay happy in her normal, predictable and emotional-turmoil free life. But then, she’d chance upon his mischievous eyes and that thought would vanish as quickly as it manifested, for a part of her was loathe to admit, that after knowing him now, she could never imagine not having him in her life.

It did not mean, though that she had to be happy about that fact.

Her eyes gazed unseeing at the panorama before her, hearing his explanation and admitting that it did make sense not to know about this sort of rivalry coming back in his life again. Valeria did not know which was worse, feeling helpless or feeling a fool, but like she did with all her emotions, it was locked up behind her facade of cool composure. That had always been her safety net to the point that most people thought of her to be unruffled by anything- a fact that couldn’t have been further from the truth, but she was proud indeed of her acting skills, and of maintaining a calm, rational, unperturbed exterior in the face of everything- adversity, change and...temptation.

A facade that was now in danger of disintegrating as she sensed his presence behind her. Turning around to tell him off, her words lost itself at the touch of his hands on her face and the intense expression in his eyes. This was perhaps the first time they had ever stood so close to each other, and for a good reason too- for if this became a habit, Valeria couldn’t vouch for the state of her heart. He really shouldn’t speak Italian, she thought to herself, for his voice got huskier and it did things to her, things she wanted to stay far away from. Her eyes involuntarily flickered to his lips as he formed those words, her hands resting on his chest, her heart softening at the sincerity in them and she wavered for a moment, taking a step closer as her lips almost touched his with her soft sigh. But then reality came slamming back and she took a step back, shaking her head and clearing her throat multiple times to get her brain to function reasonably again.

“That..that is g-good..to know” she began clearing her throat again and looking everywhere else except at him “Still, for this..disruption, you are expected to be in the dojo tomorrow where you will clean the place and the weapons.” Almost feeling like her own self, she studied her nails for a moment, pushing the thought that she had been about to kiss him, that she had desperately wanted to kiss him, away from her mind before calmly speaking again “Thank you for your explanation. You can go now.”

Her throat felt dry, her eyes burnt and her heart constricted painfully and for the life of her, Valeria couldn’t tell why. Or perhaps, a tiny buried voice attempted to whisper the reply but as always her logical, practical side silenced it. It wasn’t as if he was leaving forever, or leaving the faction-Scorpios was simply leaving the room- yet the loss she felt was immense, as if, in pulling back, in banishing him, she had lost something precious.

Her eyes softly shut in resignation. It was the right thing to do and if her experience had taught her anything, it was that often right things weren’t always the easiest to execute. This..whatever this was had to be stopped. It was a futile exercise in emotion and that was the last sort of mess Valeria wanted to get herself entangled with. She couldn’t understand the hold he had on her without even trying, couldn’t comprehend how his mischievous grin could make her day, or why she would at times lay awake in her bed replying their interactions or why- and this certainly embarrassed her to admit- she’d secretly watch him train in the dojo.

His ‘yes ma’am’ left a bitter taste in her mouth and Valeria turned her face away, her hands clutched at her side. Never had she been this conflicted and for one wild moment, she almost called out to him but her intellect whispered that she just couldn’t cross the line and blur the boundaries. It was too risky.

Her head hurt, her heart hurt, but chastising herself to get a grip, Val had turned towards the window when she felt him stride into the room again. Before her mind had any chance of processing his words, she was in his arms and his warm lips descended on her. For a moment, Val was too stunned to react but as his lips caressed her passionately, she couldn’t help but respond.

It felt natural.... It felt right. Almost like puzzle pieces fitting together.

One of her arms came brushed across his cheeks and the other clutched at his shirt pulling him closer. The feeling of being in his arms, of his heated kisses was euphoric as her tongue lightly caressed his lips, her teeth nibbling , a soft moan whispering across her breath. She never wanted to leave his powerful embrace, never wanted this moment to end.It was too beautiful, too blissful, too magnetic, too electric, too-

Too much.

It was too much.

Alarm bells clanged in her consciousness as she tore herself away breathing heavily. Her eyes met his gaze, her heart pounding in vulnerability of what her blue orbs own might reveal. She tried to speak, but words were insufficient, especially when her lips still tingled with the memory of his kisses. But this couldn’t go far, not matter how much she wanted to pull him closer and kiss him all over again-there was simply too much to lose and with some mumbled excuse, Valeria left the room quickly, shutting the door behind her.

This couldn't happen again.

She had to make sure no matter what the temptation, such momentary lapse of judgement could never happen again. And if her heart constricted in pain at that pronouncement, she’d simply have to ignore it.

It had constantly been there, the anger, the frustration, the bloody comparison- right from when he was a kid. The D'Angelo name had always been like a whip lash to him, a swear word he could no longer hear in silence. Right from his very childhood, his father had oscillated between praising and hating that family. It wasn't unusual to hear him praise and curse them at every turn, but Gio had suffered the brunt of it. Whatever he had attempted to do, Scorpios apparently did it better. It had always been a litany of Scorp this and Scorp that and how useless his father had felt his own existence was. He had tried at first to work harder but there came a time in everyone's life where the realization that no matter what, it would never be enough hit.

That had come to him on his weapon training ceremony. Excited by it, he had shown his father who had been utterly drunk and was swearing at the D'Angelo's. It was then that Gio realized that the ghost of that family would never leave them. He had been angry beyond reason then, had lashed out and swung the first punch at Scorp. It had been the beginning of their rivalry, something he was fairly certain would never end.

Whenever things went wrong, he turned to project his frustration to the D'Angelos especially Scorpios and this occasion was no different. They already had a fight but unable to resist taunting him, Gio had lingered. A cigarette perched on his lips, he grinned on hearing Scorpios approach "How naive of you to think I actually give a shit to what you say Corps" Pushing away from the wall, his eyes gestured within the dojo "Heard there are many gorgeous women here, especially the ambassador. Had a taste of them yet?" He threw his cigarette down baring his teeth in a sneering smile "I'm thinking of joining...maybe I'll go introduce myself to her. The Italian way"

(P.s It's Gio so..he swears. A Lot )
