“Not again! This is getting old Memphis!”

A disgruntled sigh left her lips as Valeria beheld her husky dashing off into the darkness. It had been a week since her return from the impromptu trip she had taken and it comforted her in a way to notice that nothing really had changed around the city. While her old self would have found that dull and would have embarked on a new adventure, this new more mature side of her welcomed such stability. It was  afterall like coming back home.

For most of her life, Val had tried to understand the word home and what it really meant to have one. But with the way her family had disintegrated very early in her childhood, that sense of belongingness had eluded her- a space left empty that, if she was being very honest with herself, even years of wanderlust had not filled.

Evermore, in that regard, had been a surprise for her in more than one way.

Her thick boots began tracking Memphis’ paw prints, the chilly air brushing past her cheeks and Valeria couldn’t help wondering about the way things worked out in the end or atleast what seemed to her like a momentary end- an end of a moment and the beginning of another new one. Her eyes flickered across the panorama in front of her, the view so familiar that she could now close her eyes and still know where to go and what she would find. A few months ago, she had believed such luxury of belongingness far beyond the realm of her destiny, but here she was in a place that has come to mean so much that the thought of ever leaving it sent a pang of unease to her heart.

Though the territory she was currently venturing into didn’t seem all that familiar. Her husky’s exuberant take off and her own musings had made her lose track of the direction. She was in the process of turning on her phone’s flashlight to observe her surroundings better when a familiar bark greeted her ears. With an exasperated ‘that husky shall be the death of me’ Valeria began walking in the direction of that sound.

Dakota laughed when Val spoke about her public speaking ability, the brunette shook her head a little “You’re braver than I am” she commented with a light chuckle, Kota preferred to keep her speaking to crowds limited to the classroom of kids she taught, big crowds weren’t exactly her strong suit. “Or we spend the majority of our lives running from it” she added to the end raising a guilty hand, always seemed easier for her to pretend that part of her didn’t exist than admit she had a problem she needed to handle and now she was paying for that decision in full. She was attempting to move past that part of her life now though, she didn’t want to be afraid of what she was anymore and maybe with time and patience, she could even come to like the person she is, including her diviner side. The way the other woman spoke about using powers being a thrill, she could relate to a little though “I guess we can call it a work in progress” she admitted with a shy smile “Though your weapon is pretty cool” she commented, pointing it out with her finger, when it wasn’t aimed at her at least.

Kota gave a slightly surprised look at Val when she spoke about paying for her grocery but then she laughed softly “Okay, that sounds like a pretty fair deal to me” but first to do something about the injury she’d inflicted. Now that she felt calmer and knew the dog and Val weren’t a threat she was much more at ease and that showed in her ability to control her powers, they weren’t always the bane of her existence thankfully. She watched the blonde as she felt her power flow through into her and was pleased to see the relief on her face. The diviner was proud to be able to do something good with these abilities because lately, they seemed to draw a lot of bad.

She allowed a bright smile to cross her lips, it was nice to be reminded that there were still good people around, despite the misunderstanding Kota was starting to wonder if she’d been really lucky in getting the chance to meet the dhampir. She felt a little overwhelmed but she went along with it, she really could use more friends after all. When Val mentioned her weaknesses she eyed the cookie and then the pup she had with her “Sweets and animals? Such a good combination of weaknesses” she teased with a bright smile as she pointed the way she was headed before all this started, the store was only about 5 minutes walk from here “My weakness” she commented as she pulled a thoughtful expression “Probably food, you could literally bribe me with a grilled cheese” she laughed softly “Or binge-watching Netflix shows” another guilty smile.

“Did you say her name was Memphis?” Kota asked, she remembered the blonde shouting that and she imagined it was the husky’s name “She’s gorgeous” she coo’ed a little with a semi-smile “I always wanted a dog but my husband was allergic” she commented nonchalantly, though she supposed she didn’t have that problem anymore.
