Life is supposed to be easy for the baby of the family. The older siblings are supposed to have carved a path for the younger that makes navigating one's existence simple. That never really happened with Aki. It sucked being the being the youngest of twins particularly when your parents never really prepped for a multiple birth. His mother had been raised in a strict Thai family before she had moved to America and she didn’t believe in Western medicine. She had gone her whole pregnancy without knowing that she was carrying two babies instead of one. It was a home birth with no assistance, luckily there had been no major problems besides the surprise of an extra baby.
Childhood was a sad affair, the twins were brought up very strictly. They were discouraged from making friends with any of the American children in their neighbourhood as their mother believed the bad behaviour would infect Aki and Koji and ruin them. Akito did his best to try to obey his mother but between school and the Buddhist Temple she made them attend he couldn't help but be influenced by the other young people he met there. Sarcasm bled into his personality which often earned him a backhand across the face or being sent to bed without supper.
Akito and Koji had just turned seventeen when things from bad to worse. The twins were on a trip with their school and the hotel they were staying in had a pool. Through all the fun and shenanigans they were having Akito discovered something that rocked the very foundation that his carefully constructed world was built upon. Koji had the red markings in the shape of angel wings on his back. His own twin was the very thing his mother and his tribe had drilled into him to hate. Akito didn’t know how he hadn’t seen the markings before, they’d been taught that the marks appeared when the person turned seven. How had Koji kept them hidden for so long? Why hadn’t has twin at confided this with him? That was what killed him the most. That his own brother had kept such a secret from him and hadn’t felt like he could be trust him and that crushed Akito.
He waited a week before he confronted Koji. It was the dead of night but Akito knew that if Koji was still there in the morning he wouldn’t live to see their eighteenth birthday. It was the most emotional conversations Akito has ever had. Koji left through the window and that was the last time Akito ever saw him. His parents were absolutely furious, demanding to know where Koji had gone. It was the first time Akito had ever gone school with a black eye, sadly it was not the last.
Life was terrible for Akito after that. He was like a prisoner in his own home. Any mention of Koji was met with violence and it was as if he had died in his parents eyes. As if to add insult to injury when Akito gained his Initia tattoo and his elemental power he was claimed by the air element. The Taylor family had been purist for generations, each member being claimed by the fire element and Akito was the first to deviate from that in more than seventy years. From then on it was a constant tirade about how he was a failure and a shame to the family name.
Akito lasted four years before all his pent up feelings exploded out in a very destructive manner. It was a minor argument but it was enough to tip the young Inita over the edge. The official police report said that his parents suffocated although to the human law enforcement it was a mystery as to how the incident occurred. The members of the Initia community knew exactly how it had happened though. They were a hateful group of people and the Taylors had been somewhat cultish leaders with an elevated reputation within the tribe and many were angered when they learned what had happened and planned to seek revenge.
Akito had known that the tribe would be angered so packed a backpack and left the house he had lived in all his life not twenty minutes after he had accidentally killed his parents. He had very few items of actual value most of the things he had grabbed were sentimental including a letter he had received from Koji. The letter told him that his twin was in Evermore in Colorado so Akito boarded a greyhound with what money he had and headed for the Eternal City. Little did he know that he was being followed by a group of his former tribesmen who were intent on putting him below the ground.
