After Damien and Nicolette Vaughn married in 1979, they had dreamt of starting a family together and after years of trying to conceive, they lost all hope. Doctors tricked the young couple into believing that they could never start a family of their own like they’d been wanting to but in reality, it just took time.. Four years later, Nicole was running to her husband with a positive pregnancy test in hand, tears of joy running down her cheeks. It was the best day of their lives and on the evening of March 3rd, 1983, the couple welcomed their first born into the world who, after much consideration, they would name Benjamin after his late grandfather who lost his life fighting for their very own country.
The little boy was cherished by his entire family, his parents spoiling him all throughout his childhood. He had a life most people would die for.. However, his happy childhood would sadly come to an end when he reached his teen years. His father left to join the army in order to follow in his own fathers footsteps. Instead of training, the army forced him to prepare for an upcoming war. With no experience whatsoever, Damien fought until a bullet flying his way would take his life.
News of his fathers death took quite the toll on Ben as well as the rest of his family. His mother mourned the death of her husband for months; she missed birthdays, graduations, promotions.. It was like he was invisible to her.
Things truly took a turn for the worst as his eighteenth birthday rolled around. His mom started to stay out all night and return home as the sun began to rise. She’d stumble in and knock a few things down on her way in, waking him from his deep slumber. He’d be forced to help her to bed and listen as she threw a series of insults his way, breaking his heart into two. He’d tuck her into bed and she’d be out cold within seconds. By the time lunchtime rolled around, she’d leave the house without uttering a single word to her son, repeating the night before all over again.
Benjamin soon realized he’d lost his mother just by the way she spoke and looked at him as if he were the sole reason all their misfortune had occurred. It hurt him and when he couldn’t take the verbal abuse and longer, he moved out. He’d already found a decent paying job months prior and with the money he’d saved up, he was able to purchase an apartment of his own. It would take years to turn the place into home but by the time he did, he’d decided to enlist in the army like his father had and this time around, he’d gone through all the required training before things were made official.
Fast forward a few months, still no contact between him and his mother, Benjamin was given the opportunity to be stationed out in a city called Evermore which he’d gladly agreed to. It would give him a fresh start to start new memories. Before moving, he’d yet to know about the supernatural living amongst the Evermore citizens until his first night in the new city.
He lived on base with his fellow military members as well as the city general. The old man had reminded him so much of his father and the two soon grew close which was why Benjamin took the news of the generals death quite hard.
At times, he’d blame himself for not sticking by the mans side when he was obviously going through things. Then, the position of city defense general was open and in order to honor their former general, Ben took it upon himself to take over the position which turned out to be anything but a struggle. He was a natural born leader and the others looked up to him like they’d done with their former head.
The former general had told him of the supernatural before his death and his first instinct had been to kill them until the factions formed a treaty. He found that some species were harmless at one point and his sole focus had turned into protecting them like he did with his own species. In his eyes, they were all the same.
He’d be lying if he said his job was easily in the beginning but the more years that passed, the more safe he’d made the city of Evermore as well as the peace he’d managed to bring between factions.
