BIOGRAPHY

I wish I could say that I am a light that never goes out, but I flicker from time to time.

Caleb Eli Segal was born in the tiny town of Fredericksburg, Texas in the middle of winter. It was the only time that the heat of the southwestern state actually resembled the southern mountains of France that his mother longed to raise him in. She was a Parisian, born and raised, and felt more unhappy in rustic, conservative Texas than she'd ever been. She came for love and a short two years later, she left for her son.

Caleb grew up bearing a different name to his mother, Adalie. She told him often that it was a token to remember his father by and that she hoped he'd someday use it well. Caleb was two when he moved to Paris and first met his Aunt Celeste. He grew up running around her lake house while his Mother painted on the dock instructing him in fluent French and English. Adalie never forgot her time in Texas, but she never returned. She kept his Father's name as a token to what he'd given her: a beautiful boy with blue eyes that took to poetry and words the way most men take to sports and balls. Adalie raised him well until he was twelve years old, until she died suddenly of an undiagnosed aneurysm. Caleb’s Aunt Celeste took him in and they moved to the city where she opened a flower shop. He worked there until leaving for college in America when he was seventeen.

Upon returning to France, Caleb met Ava Jacobs while volunteering at a hospital that had once treated his mother during the short time that she'd been on life support. They were quick to bond. They grew quickly from friends to lovers that into building a life together which would have someday been filled with cheesy jokes in all of the 'remember whens'. However, it was only two short years before Ava's plane disappeared into the Indian Ocean. She was lost at sea while volunteering to shuttle people away from a tropical storm that was shadowing an island where she'd landed her plane to refuel while returning home from a standard flight. It left Caleb with more questions than answers and a huge piece of his heart sunk beneath the waves.

He was eager to get away from the life that he had built, known, and loved for so long, Caleb went abroad in America and took his a summer job on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma when he was twenty-three. The gentle-minded poet didn’t much enjoy the heat, the foul-mouthed men, or the stink of the cattle. Surprisingly, he wasn’t the only one.

Spencer Segal never left the cattle business despite that his first ranch had failed some eighteen years ago. He hadn’t written poetry again, either. But, a chance encounter with a young man who shared his name and deep set eyes incited a curiosity for the past. Meeting his father filled Caleb ot only with many of the answers he’d needed since childhood, but also with new questions. He could never stay in one place for long and driving in the direction of anywhere seemed like a good place to start. Three days later, Caleb found himself on the edge of Evermore, Colorado with a broken down motorcycle and a fierce storm on the horizon. Abandoning the bike and strapping on his backpack, he walked towards shelter, hoping to make it there before the tornado. He awoke three days later, in a strange room, with the gaze of curious strangers all around him.

When Caleb returned to Paris, he found that without the extra help running the flower shop, Celeste's business was nearly out of money. Despite the dreams he had of continuing his journey abroad, he began working three jobs to help get things running smoothly while writing and drawing on spare napkins. Family would always come first.

It was the napkin scribbles and blank looks that caught the gaze of old friend, Kara Danvers, when she came to stay in Paris and work in Au Nom De La Rose. Despite that their romance was short and their friendship long, it was Kara who set Caleb on his path to healing and gave him the strength to search out the wreckage of the plane crash. He found it on Île Saint-Paul. The island was no more 3 miles wide, but big enough to hold the mystery. Though no bodies were found underneath the rubble was an engagement ring, a pilot’s badge, and a bird shape pendant that had long occupied the dashboard of the Clare de Lune, Ava’s plane. Sometimes the past comes back to haunt us and sometimes we have to hunt it down, before it settles like dust beneath the waves. Ava Jacobs is still listed as ‘Missing in Action’, but Caleb found what he lost.

PERSONALITY
Between his parent’s divorce and his mother’s death, growing up, Caleb became accustomed to finding new ways to land on his feet when life swayed him towards new circumstances. The result was a young man who enjoys adventure, but has a great value for home. However, to him, home is not a place with four walls, but the people that fill them. He feels most at ease when surrounded by those he loves and most at a loss in a room of strangers. It can take him time to warm up to others and his renown for keeping others at an arm's length away is more of a protective instinct than purposeful. Being exposed to the arts greatly during childhood left great imprints on him and even today he carries a sketchbook (although few have seen it) and prefers to listen to classical music or jazz than anything on the radio in recent times. In a few words, Caleb is...

POSITIVE TRAITS

A is for artistic. Caleb grew up deeply exposed to the arts as his Mother often woke up and fell asleep with her hands covered in paint. This fascination that he saw never stopped as he grew, and Caleb continued to find new parts of this world that drew him in. However, he doesn’t consider himself artistic and very rarely shows what he draws or photographs to others. (Exceptions: Kara, Celeste…)

S is for steady. While his feet may always be on the move, when it comes to his own person, Caleb could easily be described as calm and steady. There isn’t much that gets to him and in general, he tends to roll with the punches. He is the friend with a shoulder and the family others depend on.

A is for adventurous. Caleb struggles staying in one place for very long. There is a continual thirst inside him to see new things and once he has accomplished everything he can in a certain place, he moves on. Well traveled and only in his twenties, he has many stories to tell, but also a knowledge that he may never be able to settle down in one place for more than a few years.

T is for tender-hearted. Caleb feels deeply. Once you open up his door to excitement or encouragement, you’ve made a friend for life. However, this also means that he feels loss heavily. Whether it is a friend or a family member, once he’s bonded with them, it tends to be something he will carry forever. He was born with a different perception of the world, emotionally, visually, and sensually. When it comes to relationships, rain, and raspberries, he is able to enjoy things a little bit deeper than most people do.

E is for energized. If something captures his excitement, Caleb finds it a true struggle to either stay quiet or stay still. His energy literally expands from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. It tends to be contagious and he was always the first pick for group projects all the way through school. Once you get to know him, he still often is filled with contagious laughter and ideas.

NEGATIVE TRAITS

D is for difficult to get to know. Caleb is a very private person and reveals very little about his life to others. It isn’t general skepticism, or preference, it’s just natural. Sometimes, there is an air of mystery around him as he comes and goes speaking to select people and choosing to keep a few close friends and everyone else as mere acquaintances.

A is for anxious. Ever since childhood, Caleb has struggled with anxiety, particularly in large crowds. It often stemmed from how often he changed schools and even in adulthood, he does better in groups of small people or one on one. Truly introverted, time away from people is something he needs to experience everyday in order to keep his heart beating straight.

C is for can’t settle down. Caleb’s adventurous tick may be good for him, but for others, including his friends and family it can be a true struggle. He is constantly on the move and staying in one place is difficult unless he has a true reason why he can’t leave. Claustrophobia is often the feeling equated with standing still. He needs to be able to run and breathe the fresh air and get far away from whatever it is that is bothering him. Sadly, Caleb has yet to learn that you cannot outrun your demons or your loss. It is something you have to stand up and face.

MEYER’S BRIGGS | EXPLAINED: INFP the mediator | I am a true idealist, defined by my quiet nature, sense of morality, and inner passion.

FEARS

Deep Water thalassophobia is an intense or repeated fear of deep or dark water. Caleb struggled with a fear of deep water until he was in primary school.

Enclosed Spaces  claustrophobia is the fear of being enclosed in a small space or room and unable to escape or get out. It is typically classified as an anxiety disorder, which often results in panic attacks. For Caleb, being in one place or one room without the ability to smell the fresh air or go somewhere new brings anxiety. He drives a motorcycle and not a car for this exact reason.

Airplane Flight  aerophobia is the fear of flying on a plane. Once fiancée Ava died in a plane crash (which was never recovered) Caleb refused to do with personal flight and whenever possible travels by anything but a plane.

SKILLS

SKETCHING - Caleb took his first art class in secondary school and got a C simply because he didn’t put any effort into his work. When he graduated from year five, his teacher told him that if he were more interested in the arts, he truly did have the talent. After that, Caleb became curious. He soon visited the gallery that had purchased his mother’s paintings after she died. Lacking a proper notebook, that summer was filled with recreating her best works on coffee shop napkins in pen. Ever since, he has carried a sketchbook with him and can be frequently found in front of buildings with a pencil in motion completely oblivious to the rest of the world.

FIXER-UPPER - Caleb enjoys fixing things. He often sees discarded broken objects as puzzles that can be solved, shined up, and used again. This is a useful skill when it comes to homes, mechanics, and even gardening. He enjoys applying himself to new skills, but if he doesn’t find them interesting, will quickly lose motivation.

CHEF - While, Caleb does not have a Michelin star, he does enjoy cooking especially if it means improvising the recipe. The ‘rules do not apply here’ type of kitchen can sometimes turn out mouth melting delicious and sometimes turn out a hot mess. It depends on the day.

SPRINTER - Enjoying exercise and being hard to chase down don’t necessarily have to go hand in hand and Caleb is definitely the second one. Despite having asthma as a child, he won a few races, but distance running and simply going fast are very different. At least it’s comforting to know that in a high speed chase with a wild animal, he would have decent chances.

PILOT - Caleb can fly a non military plane, but convincing him to even get inside one will be a very difficult task. While dating Ava, who was a pilot herself, he took two years of flying lessons and eventually earned his own certification. While it may be legally out of date, in case of an emergency, instinct would
kick into gear.
