It was a dark night on November the 22nd, 1891 when Julian Brixton was out on his land, continuing the farm work he’d left in the day when he had to take care of his pregnant wife. It was quiet and unusually warm for that time of year making it all the more easy for him to catch up on time lost. It was nearly impossible to keep up with everything that needed to be done when one had a family of two small children and another baby on the way being carried by a woman who was in no condition for the farm life. However, excuses wouldn’t let them keep their property; Especially for a negro family in a divided country.

Julian wiped his brow and decided to get a few hours rest before the sun would rise him like every day, but a sudden falling star had caught his attention in the vast and open skies of Louisiana. The light became brighter and brighter and before he could even comprehend what was truly happening, the falling star had landed in his fields. The animals were in a frenzy as he dropped his shovel and went running towards the impact. The ground had been charred and the impact devastating on his crops as he peered into the hole with wide eyes. His mind couldn’t seem to understand that what he was looking at was not at all what he expected.

He roused his wife from her sleep and brought her into the sitting room where he had placed the naked woman who had fallen from the heavens. His wife nearly fainted seeing the woman and urged Julian to be rid of her. It would put their entire family at risk by possibly having the woman there if people began thinking the wrong thing. After all, a naked white woman being found by a black man was nearly impossible to explain to anyone in those times let alone trying to explain that she had fallen out of the sky. Julian shook his head, telling his wife that they couldn’t leave the woman so vulnerable.

The mysterious woman rose from her sleep to the sound of laughing children prodding at her face with the sun warming her skin through an open window. The children all screamed when she woke and went off running to their mother who came quickly into the room in her apron and wooden spoon in hand. Julian’s wife introduced herself as Savannah, inquiring as to the woman’s name and what had happened to her the previous night. The raven haired star shook her head softly without recollection of anything at all of who she was or where she came from. Savannah could see how scared the woman was and quickly decided that they would house her secretly until she could get back on her feet.

The weeks had passed and the Star had come to remember her name being Callie. She immediately took to helping Julian on the farm, feeling badly for ruining part of his crops as well as wanting to earn her keep. It was interesting learning the history of this world and she heeded the words of the Brixtons by staying only on their land and not venturing further into town despite her deep curiosity of seeing other people.

Eventually through a little schooling by the family, Callie felt confident enough to make her rounds in town, but always making sure to avoid anyone that asked too many questions. The Brixtons were not welcome in the southern white town no matter if they were given the property by the previous owner who had died their slave owner. The cautiousness she showed would only prove to backfire as a man became a little too interested in her and decided to follow her back home after graciously turning him away. Seeing the unusual living situation from afar, the man informed the authorities.

Soon there were men banging on the door of the Brixton home. Callie looked out the window and saw the man that she had dismissed in town, knowing she had been the reason for their visit. Julian quickly hid Callie away, but as they came bursting into the home and began threatening locking the family in jail, Callie presented herself to the officers. The story they had come up with in case a situation like this emerged rolled off her tongue easily. Callie was meant to be a runaway and the Brixtons the family that took her in when she had been at her lowest. The officers were skeptical, but they departed from the home, leaving them all feeling as if this wasn’t over.

Months passed and the harassment didn’t seem to end. Everyone now knew of the unusual living situation at the Brixton farm and threats to their lives were becoming constant. Callie couldn’t stand to be the reason for it and snuck out of the house one night with tears in her eyes. She could never thank the family enough for their kindness and the risk they took by taking her in.

Walking through the yard, she was soon met with strong hands wrapped around her mouth and arms. The men were back and called to Julian to come outside. The mob was out of control and looking for any excuse to draw blood and as her friend came from the house, all hell broke loose. They brutally attacked the man as his wife and children screamed from the doorway, pleading for them to stop. Callie attempted to resist against the man holding her, but his grip was like iron.

A surge she had never felt before began to burn inside her as her emotions boiled over. An impossibly bright light seemed to explode from the star, knocking everyone off their feet. Her breathing was ragged and hands shaking as the light finally dissipated while she stood over them. The focus was now gone from Julian as they all stared at the star in disbelief. Legs feeling like lead, she willed herself from the spot and took off into the night, never seeing the Brixtons again.

The years passed. Decades seemed to fly with the blink of an eye and trying to learn more about herself was somewhat impossible when she hadn’t a clue of what she actually was. Getting on while pretending to be human had become easier, however. Callie picked up farm work when she could, though it had proven difficult to do much of any hard labor being a woman in a society that considered you less than for countless years. It didn’t stop or deter her from wanting to prove them all wrong, much of it stemming from that night in Louisiana. She never wanted to feel like that again. She never wanted to feel weak or stand by and watch like a spectator while others were being treated unfairly.

Her travels across the midwest eventually brought her in contact with a woman claiming to be a wayfinder. Callie had never heard of such a thing before, but listening to Ophelia and seeing the kind of power she contained made her believe she wasn’t alone in the world. It was finally time to be with her own people.

Callie had felt like she was home on the Isle of Skye, even becoming close with a few of the guards who helped to train her in martial arts and other fighting skills so she could protect herself and her kind should she ever need. It wasn’t to last. Soon it was her own friends on the Guard turning against her as they locked her and her fellow Stars away by order of the Aspects as their agreement fell apart. Devastated, Callie held onto hope that an understanding would be met, but without their leader, a darkness began to befall all of the celestials who remained imprisoned, including herself while the years fell away.

The day their freedom finally came was one of joy and sorrow. Despite finally being freed from their captivity by Ophelia, Callie also mourned the loss of lives to the ranks of the Guards on Skye. She had known not all of them wanted to keep the celestials locked away and their deaths were not rewarding or satisfying. It did not solve the problem that brought their kind to imprisonment in the first place.

Despite the malcontent many of the Stars felt for the Aspects and their Guards, Callie wanted to make a difference. Many had thought she was crazy for her ideas of trying to make peace with the Ailwards and it had caused her to become somewhat of an outcast to her people over the years after their escape from the Isle. Her heart would not be swayed, however. She needed to ensure that something like what happened between the Celestials and Ailwards would never happen again to anyone else just as she had sworn back in Louisiana. She couldn’t sit back and watch while nothing changed and the misunderstandings of people caused more misguided hate.

Callie had reunited with one of the Guards she had become friendly with on Skye and put aside the hurt and betrayal she felt for his participation in keeping them locked away. She knew he had wavered in his loyalty when it came to keeping them prisoners, believing that it wasn’t right or fair to the species. She even explained to him her plans of wanting to join the Guard and be the first celestial to do so. He had called her crazy at first, but after listening to her determination, and realizing that her intentions were true, he gave in and brought her to the manor.

The magical barriers which kept people that meant to do harm out did not falter for a moment as Callie stepped closer and moved through the grounds of the manor with a pure heart that longed to help keep the world of supernaturals and humans safe; Even from each other.
