To say that angels fall is an understatement and maybe it happens more than people realize. However I know that to be a reality more than anyone else since that seemed to have been the start of my life. To some being born into the Smith family which owned Smith Enterprise would have been a fairytale given that my family was rather well off owning a string of convenience and grocery stores. Money after all was never a problem but as the saying goes, money isn’t everything.
My parents seemed to be a happy married couple according to the views of the outside world but they never got to see what happened behind closed doors. It’s amazing that two people who hated one another so much can put on such a good show but I apparently come from a line of actors which was a skill that was passed on to me.
You see my parents married one another for financial gain, my mother’s family owned and operated a few local corner stores and my father, well he was the heir to Smith Enterprise. They met by accident when my Father’s car broke down after an intense meeting with my Grandfather who told him that he needed to marry if he ever wanted to take over the business. As my father waited for a car to come pick him up he watched my mother working hard as her own Father put her down and talked down to her. It became obvious to him early on that they were two of like mind.
In a completely uncharacteristic act my Father asked my lowly mother on a dinner date. The two had nothing in common other than the fact that they were both set on being successful and taking over the family business. My mother could only offer my father a wife to appease my Grandfather but my Father, well he could offer my mother much more. Within a matter of less than two months the two were getting married and seemed to be perfect together since they had worked long and hard on the story that would be told to those around them.
After a year of marriage my Father was on the brink of taking over Smith Enterprise when my Grandfather placed one final stipulation on both. This was the biggest one yet and what brought me into the world, they had to bare him a grandchild, it was an old world stipulation but my Grandfather wanted to be sure my parents weren’t just putting on a show for his benefit. However he underestimated just how far the two of them were willing to go.
My Grandfather was the one who gave me my first name, to him I was the future hope of the family so he named me as such. Sometimes I truly believe he was the only one who was happy about my birth. Most of my younger years were spent with nannies and my Grandfather since my parents were always more focused on the company than me. The man who was often cold to others became the man I trusted the most, my parents never kissed my wounds as a toddler or child but my Grandfather would and he would sing to me softly to get me to calm down. The first time I truly believe I was strong was because my Grandfather taught me to do so, he showed me that emotions didn’t mean weakness when you used them correctly.
I went to the best schools for children’s development and learned incredibly fast for my age. My reading level skyrocketed once I learned how words flowed together to create stories. They could take me far away from what people thought was such a charmed life, I often began to read when my parents would begin to argue once the help and my Grandfather were gone from the house. By the time I was ten the fighting had gotten pretty bad and it was hard to block out so I began to act out at school thinking maybe if they cared about me that they would notice the signs and pull together.
The naivety of children causes them to believe that they can fix things even when it’s impossible, after all things weren’t broken since my parents had never wanted to be stuck together. Both got what they wanted along with a daughter they had never wanted. The more I tried to push them together and the more I acted out the more they fought blaming one another for my behavior so I stopped acting out. The fighting died down a little but it was still a constant thing.
By my teenage years I was back to acting out but it wasn’t for the attention of my parents since it had become clear to me at a younger age that they didn’t care. My Grandfather tried to talk sense into me but I wouldn’t listen and fell in with the wrong crowd. I began to drink and do some recreational drugs along with breaking and entering in order to steal. Money was never an issue for me since all I had to do was ask but I loved the thrill of it and my friends wanted me to do it, after all they actually paid attention to what I did.
It was easy to steal from others since I seemed so unassuming with my sweet smile and brand named clothing, after all who would need to steal when they had as much money as I did? This went on for years until I was talked into making the biggest mistake of my life, I broke into the corporate headquarters of my family’s company after a night of heavy drinking. My friends remained outside seeing if I was actually willing to break into headquarters.
Everything was going incredibly well and I was in my Father’s office when the door opened and the night guards were standing there. They recognized me which I knew was not a good thing and my family was going to be called, however the only thing they did was lead me out of the building and into the back alley telling me to go home and they would pretend they never saw me. The alley was dark and empty my friends must have decided that I was taking too long and something was wrong so they left.
I was at least an hour walk away from my home and had no one to call so I continued forward knowing that neither of my parents had even realized I wasn’t home. Passing a bar a man let out a cat call at me and I ignored him since it was something I was used to though normally I had my friends around me for support. Continuing on I was pulled into an alleyway and tried to fight off the person realizing it was the man from the bar. “Well don’t you look tasty.” That was one of the last things I remember before waking up in my room being completely unsure of how I got there.
Apparently a day had passed but I slept through it and it was once again night. I awoke with a terrible hunger and a pounding in my head which wasn’t helped by the fact that my parents were arguing downstairs. Staggering downstairs I watched as they two went through a verbal spat which made me head feel like it was going to explode. “Shut up!” My voice echoed through halls causing my parents to look my way but my Father was not amused.
Never have a heard his voice so angry nor the words which left his mouth directed at me. My father moved to hit me but my mother stopped him and he struck her blood welling from the cut of his ring against her lip. A red haze seemed to coat my vision and I can’t clearly remember what happened next I just remember needed to take care of my hunger.
When the haze left my vision my parents were lying dead on the floor of our home and as I looked over my Grandfather was standing in the doorway with an expression of shock on his face. I didn’t think twice I just ran having no idea of what I was or what had happened to me. The man from the night before easily found me and told me that he had been watching me, waiting for me. He told me I was no longer human but a vampire, a creature far different from that of movies and he would teach me how to control what I was.
For the first time it felt like I belonged to something bigger than myself and so I followed Rave, or at least that was what he wanted us to call him. I learned how to control the hunger and blend into normal society at night, we never fed on innocences and only turned those who were lost and needed someone. Rave explained that was how he decided to turn me, I was looking for acceptance in all the wrong places and I finally found a group I belonged with.
For years we ran the city in the dark of night, giving the lonely a family to live within and something to live for. I was given a job, to enter the Smith Enterprise headquarters and out one of their guards that Rave wanted. However after I entered the building I found that was just a cover, Rave and my Grandfather had been talking and the two decided I could help them both by taking back over what was mine. After all my Grandfather had covered up my parent’s death to look like a robbery gone wrong and made it look as if I had been out of the country at the time.
When my Grandfather had said he wanted a grandchild, he knew my parents were nothing more than liars wanting what wasn’t theirs and so he made sure that the family line would continue. My whole life he knew everything and he was the reason Rave found me because he knew that could only do so much to change my life. After it was announced that I would be taking over the company my Grandfather and Rave decided it was time I needed to go somewhere that people like me were accepted and so we created a branch in Evermore city.
Once a year I was meant to return to Denver to brief my Grandfather and Rave on everything was was going on within the city but when I was meant to leave the barrier came down. It’s been strange to be trapped from the world and city I grew up in but Grayson and the rest of the species ambassadors are trying to bring us all together to get through whatever seems to be going on.
