Seoul was a bright, bustling, beautiful city. Never a chance to sleep, never a thing to miss. Every turn held different worlds, every corner hosted something new. And for fifteen years, Jiyong was a happy kid. Sure, his mother had left them when he was only five years old, but he was so young, it didn't faze him one bit. Jiyoung had a hard-working, kind, supportive father, and a spunky little sister who always loved to play. Their lives were simple, easy, but Jiyoung was content.

That is, until a week after Jiyoung turned sixteen. It started at midnight, when he was wrenched from sleep by an ache on his lower back, a scalding, burning pain that took stuffing his fist into his mouth to keep from screaming out loud. Rushing to the bathroom, he twisted himself around to check out his reflection, shocked beyond belief to see black tribal tattoo-like lines cutting through his skin. It felt as if someone had put the mark there with a branding iron. Upon this discovery, Jiyoung did what any sixteen year old boy would do: he kept quiet.

A few days after this bizarre mark had appeared, Jiyoung started noticing he could do things no one should ever really be able to do. Lighting candles with a blink of an eye, controlling the fireplace with a mere thought, or never getting cold again. Like ever. A week of this, and finally, in a haze of confusion and slight fear, Jiyoung thrust his hand into the fireplace, expecting pain as the flames licked his skin. But all he felt was nothing more than a warm tickle, and when he pulled his hand away, the flames stuck, dancing around his fingers. So of course, he did what any sixteen year old boy with newly discovered powers would do: he messed around with them.

Not a flyer nor parking ticket nor pile of test papers were safe when he was around, mysteriously bursting into flame and crumbling to ash. Couples out on romantic dates would get a fright when their napkins would catch fire from a candle that was burning much too bright to be normal. Oh yes, Jiyoung was a trickster by nature, and with this new gag up his sleeve, nothing could stop him.

Until they had gotten out of control. Police reports state they had no idea how the curtain caught fire in the living room that night, or how the fire had spread so unnaturally quickly throughout the house. Cigarette? No one smoked. Electrical fire? There wasn't an outlet nearby. Arsonry? There was no motive. It was a mystery that splashed across newspapers for weeks: Mysterious Fire Destroys Home to Family of Three, Youngest Daughter Almost Killed.

For three weeks Jiyoung drowned in guilt for almost killing his sister that he adored so much. He cowered every time he saw a flame, or felt the heat under his skin. For months, he did all that he could to contain the fire within him, until one day he felt as if the fire would consume him if he didn't let it out. Late that night, Jiyoung snuck out and ran. Ran as fast as he could until he came across the nearest isolated area he could find. The he exploded, flames engulfing him in a scorching blaze, searing gravel and trees all around him. It sucked the energy out of him, as he lay on the charred gravel, relishing in the feel of the cold night air on his sizzling skin. It was in that moment, he chose to run away.

Jiyoung spent seven years on the run, hopping from country to country. Not a single word had been sent to his family since the night he left, but the idea that this was for the better was what kept him moving forward. And one night, in some run down bar in rain-soaked England did he catch wind of a city somewhere in the United States. A city that hosted strange people. People who could raise the dead, or turn into animals, or create tidal waves with the flick of their hand. Three drinks and a few phone calls later, Jiyoung was set to leave on the next flight out.

Now on American soil, Jiyoung, or Jason Karter as he now goes by, has just found this "Eternal City", and hopefully, he'll find people like him too.
