The night sky was her home for many years before an abrupt and painful fall towards the earth. To her, that night was ordinary like no other and the sky before was as bright as day and surrounded by the beautiful light, colors, songs, and the dancing of her celestial family. She was only a young star then and despite the rules that governed her family, Kaia knew the risks of playing too friskily under a meteor shower, but her curiosity ultimately won out over the rules. Her family always talked about how humans made wishes and sometimes those wishes were so strong and the hope in their hearts so powerful that it called a star to walk the earth, but Kaia had always believed that it was just a bedtime story. It hadn’t seemed real enough to touch her, to pull her away from the only world she had ever known.
Not until that summer night. Kaia had never experienced seasons in the way humans had, not before the night she fell. She only knew that she longed to play in the meteor shower and how fun it looked from a distance to dance from rock to rock and hear the call of the fiery, yet playful explosions. She loved exploring and her parents feared her sense of adventure. One night, after another bedtime story and song among the clouds, Kaia snuck away. Night was different up where Celestials lived and so was sleep, it was less a necessity and more a luxury; but there was quiet in their home as she looked behind her and outwards to the field of light which called her name. Everything here was still and everything there capered and swayed.
Kaia set foot outside, never knowing she would not look upon her family again; or even recall them to memory for many years. The meteors invited her to skip inside their sparkles and one step at a time, she amused herself in their party. However, even a young celestial could tire herself after tackling space and as quickly as she had started she began to fall asleep among the embers.
A wish is a powerful thing, but Kaia didn’t remember falling. She woke up on cold earth and surrounded by dark stone and brazen smoke. Above her, she could see the sky as the stars were just beginning to merge into sunrise.
What had happened? Where was she? What was her name?
Before she could remember this, a pair of nurses brought her inside and fed her, only to pass out and sleep for several days. She’d been found near the base of Mount Shari, Japan; which had become a shelter for people still recovering from an earthquake which took place two years ago. The first weeks of Kaia’s existence on earth were hazy. She quickly found that she possessed legs and a voice for speaking. While those who brought her into their home were kind, they did demand that she work for her sustenance, which was now necessary to her life. Things she had never needed like food and water and sleep were now things that her body demanded every few hours. Kaia had never felt weak before, but a newfound sense of frailty seemed to follow her wherever she went.
The Jitō family was not well off and taking in another member to feed meant that Kaia had to work in the village from nearly sunrise to sundown, but all she wanted to do was waiting in the shade of the bamboo until the night sky rose and she could watch and chart the sky. Despite having no memory or no reason, she felt inexplicably drawn towards it. It was the only thing that brought her comfort. Her life following the fall was often one of nomadic solitude. Although Kaia eventually grew used to a life inside her human form, there was always some amount of displacement that echoed inside her. To cope, she gardened, she wrote, and she taught herself as much about music as she could over the years.
Very often, it seemed like the world continued to move and for her, even her face never changed. It never aged and the humans that she cared for would slowly begin to drop of either old age or illness. This changed when she found a group of others like her who called themselves celestials. They all had different stories of their lives since they’d come to live on earth, but they were lead by a Wayfinder called Ophelia. Together, they all journeyed to live on an island which became their new home. It was a peaceful place which didn’t only house celestials. For the first time in her life, Kaia met other supernatural people, like the Ailwards, who had sworn to protect her species. Living on Skye reminded Kaia of coming home to a place that she couldn’t remember. There were billowing clouds, soft grass, and people around her that she didn’t have to hide from. For the first time in over a century, Kaia could rest and wake up in the morning and not hate the sun. However, in the back of her mind there was a lingering sense that not all was well and good things couldn’t last forever. Her intuition frightened her, but for many months, she shoved it to the back of her mind.
Not all good things can last forever and fighting broke out on Skye when a celestial was killed in a struggle over the balance of power. Kaia was especially blindsided as she’d known the conflict was coming and hadn’t warned anyone. She felt herself watching from the sidelines as the Celestials, the Ailwards, and the rest of the species broke out into a battle that ended the once peaceful haven of their home. Some tried to escape, but one by one her species was blamed and then imprisoned by those who had once been their most fierce and loyal protectors. Captured in a barrier that hid them from the rest of the world, the Celestials became invisible to time for the next fifty years and all Kaia could do was try to continue life. Mood on the island was dark. It was difficult to remain being the bright star in a world where all you could see was walls with no door and the same faces, continually broken as yourself. Kaia knew that everyone else tried to keep up the spirits as well as she did, but the harsh reality of being prisoners was no longer a whisper. Over time, people began to talk. They wanted to escape. Even as she healed, Ophelia had never stopped searching for a way off the island a rescue for her people and eventually, it came.
Adjusting to the outside world hasn’t been easy for Kaia, but ever since the break of the wall on Skye, she has chosen to with all her heart remains kind. Growing through the dark and in unfriendly conditions hasn’t changed her flowering spirit, however, she cannot help that strangers make her uncomfortable and her sense of adventure which was once so uninhibited is these days less free than it once was; she would rather be safe than be wild.
Positive: Tender hearted, altruistic, and creative
