Name: Karlie Raymen
Age: 28
Species: Moon Shifter
Preferred Animal: Snow Tiger
Family: Mark Raymen, Saskiah Raymen
Face Claim: Taylor Swift
The Moon Shifter clan was something of legend the clan itself having died out over one hundred and fifty years previous to Karlie’s birth. Those that remained were nothing more than humans who hoped to return to the former glory they had once had. The only thing they had to hold onto was myths and stories but that didn’t stop the belief. The stories were circulated through the tribe about the the purpose they had once had and of the vampires they were meant to protect humanity from. The biggest story she was told was that of a set of twins from their tribe would reuniting them with their power and restore the clan.
Karlie was born the older of two siblings, her parents believing that her cousins Saskiah and Kiel were the twins the stories spoke of. As a young child Karlie didn’t care too much about the myths or stories since she believed them to be just that. The only thing she truly cared about was the fact that her two cousins were her playmates and friends along with the rest of the children in the tribe. Her brother Mark was someone she took a protective role over from the moment he was born, she loved him so much and she knew that brothers were normally the protective ones but this time it wasn’t the case.
Kiel was so gentle and kindhearted that it worried Karlie on occasion. Sure he was older than she was but she just felt a strong protective urge since some would tease him about being so kind. Often times she would step in when people would tease him about his kind heart of his health which were two things he could never change and they were what made him special. Often times they would play in the woods by the town in France. The two would climb trees and play hide and seek and she tried to take it easy on him.
One time while out in the woods playing hide and seek Karlie was seeking out Kiel and she couldn’t find him. She yelled and yelled his name as panic began to take hold, finally she found him passed out behind a tree stomp. He wasn’t responsive and she didn’t want to leave him to get help so they both stayed out in the woods for hours until members of the tribe finally came to find them. Never has she been so scared as she held her cousin to her, his head in her lap as she watched his slow breathing as she stroked his hair. From that day forward she knew she would always be there for him after they went through all of that together.
It wasn’t just her cousin or younger brother that she was protective over but everyone who couldn’t or wouldn’t stand up for themselves. Children always liked to pick on one another after all and she didn’t take kindly to that but she was a talker which meant she wasn’t mean to anyone she merely taught them that what they were doing is wrong. There would be a group of other kids taunting one and by the end of it she would have them all sitting down listening to a story which taught them to be kind to one another.
It was feelings such as this that caused Karlie to want to go into either counseling or becoming a lawyer to represent those in need and find justice where there was none. For most of their tribe it was rare to leave, to seek out a different life at least not until the Moon Clan ritual was complete. She knew few would understand her need to get away and chase her own dreams. When she explained this need to Markos he seemed hurt and didn’t want her to leave. They had never been without one another after all but she needed to seek out her own life. Mind made up she explained to her family the choice she had made and she could tell it broke their hearts and they believed her to be forsaking her birthright for a human life.
When Karlie left the tribe she knew it would be unlikely that even her family would contact her. She enrolled in law school without the help or assistance of her family and took on shifts as a waitress at a local restaurant to make up for what her loans and scholarships didn’t cover. She had done well in high school and thankfully that lead to her owing less on her school but it did keep her busy. So busy that she was able to ignore the heartache of her family turning their back on her and believing that she had done the same to them.
The myths and stories all came to ahead while Karlie was away at school the tribe calling in the help of the fae to help them with the ritual. If she had known the ritual was taking place she would have returned home, she didn’t fully understand it but it had always creeper her own and given her a bad feeling. Mark was the only one who had ever called her or asked how to get in contact with her.
A busy Friday night was interrupted by a phone call for her, the bartender motioning her over. At first she tried to tell him to just take a message but she was told it was her brother and he seemed upset. Taking the call she could barely hear at first over the music and chatter around her but the words he spoke rang clear the phone slipping from her hand as she stood in shock. It took a few minutes for her to fully comprehend what had just been told to her. Tears streamed down her face as her co-workers tried to find out what happened but she ran to the bathroom and locked herself inside. Blue eyes were filled with tears as she thought about her sweet older cousin who had played hide and seek with her in the woods and told her to follow her dreams. How could someone so lively be gone? And for what? The revival of the clan? They had been fine living as humans and yet the clan had wanted more and her cousin had paid the price.
How people who had taken care of Kiel his whole life had allowed him to die was beyond her and it was forgivable. Any plans she ever had to return home were gone, she didn’t want to see any of them again. Kiah had survived reviving their clan and though she knew that she shouldn’t, Karlie resented her for it, her brother was dead and she was traveling to find more Moon shifters and force them into becoming something they may not want to be.
Continuing her college education she tried not to think of her clan and what had become of them since it all just seemed incredibly unjust. Mark didn’t even call her anymore and that upset her more than anything since he was the only one she still trusted in. However she easily made friend as she created a study group to help them all. This was where she met Cameron McAvery, he was smart and incredibly gifted with debate teaching Karlie a lot since he had the ability to see all sides of a situation. It quickly progressed from a friendship of knowledge to romantic interest, he would pick her up from work and help her with her courses as he worked on his own. He seemed perfect but that quickly changed.
If Karlie would take too long to get out of work or if she didn’t answer things correctly he would begin to angry and at first it was just verbal. She wished that she someone to talk to but everyone she knew he also knew and it was unlikely they would believe her. One night Karlie’s final customer at the restaurant grabbed her hand and was flirting with her despite her trying to pull away. Cameron saw the whole thing and when they got home it was the first time he had ever hit her.
In school they had learned of domestic disputes and why it was so hard for women to come forward, Karlie had always thought it would just be easy to leave but she cared about him and she couldn’t understand how or why he had changed. She quickly became defensive and timid and even her friends began to notice but she was too afraid to say anything and too embarrassed as well. She came from a strong, proud family and yet she was allowing someone to treat her in such away.
The more stress Carson was under the worse it became so as the bar exam began to sneak up on them things became worse and one night he struck her outside of the parking lot at work. However that night was different one of the men inside was a police officer and he witnessed the whole thing while he was headed out to his car. Within an instant Carson was face down on the pavement as the officer read him his rights as tears rolled down Karlie’s reddened cheeks. Both were taken down to the station, Carson swore he didn’t do anything and Karlie would agree with that and maybe she would have if the officer hadn’t pulled her aside separately and told her that it wasn’t her fault. Which she figured that he would say but he turned it around on her asking her what she would do if a friend was in the same situation. In the end Karlie pressed charges but it shattered her faith in humanity causing her to become far less trusting.
Focusing on nothing more than school she was able to not only graduate but also pass her bar exam. Pride swelled inside of her that she had done it all herself as well. Shortly after her graduation she was looking at different law offices to apply to when she received a call from her brother for the first time in years. Normally she would have just been pleasant and then told him to shove it since he asked for her help but he was the only family she kept in touch with. He begged that she come with him to a place called Evermore, that they had to find Saskiah. Despite the resentment Karlie had once felt towards her cousin she knew that Saskiah would have never intentionally placed Kiel in harm's way.
It took a lot of convincing on Mark’s part to get her to agree to come to Evermore City but she didn’t want him going into a strange city on his own, especially one with the reputation that Evermore had. Flying out to her brother they entered the city together both weary of the many species which called the City home. The night they arrived in the city was the night the comet struck, they watched as it hurtled through the night sky hitting slightly away from the main portion of the city. They stuck together as it made impact unsure of what was happening before they both collapsed in pain. It hurt so much which wasn’t helped by the burning sensation she felt on her wrist. Looking her wrist there was a moon shaped tattoo upon her skin.
Once she and her brother realized they now had the mark of the shifter there was under a time crunch to find Kiah. The process of working up to the shift was a painful one and she was beginning to think she was losing her mind when the visions started, it wasn’t helpful that her brother was going through the same painful process she was and she just wanted to help him and protect him from the pain, visions and dreams. There was nothing either of them could do though other than find Saskiah which was their main focus.
It took longer than they would have liked in order to find their cousin but when they did it was well worth it. The shifter ritual was performed the blue light washing over her before she stood before the rest of the tribe as a snow tiger. It wasn’t an animal natural to the area but it was the one that picked her. Never had she wanted to be a shifter and believed it all to be fairy tales but now she felt as if she belonged to something and wanted to make things up to her cousin and her brother.
Setting herself up within the community she began to look for jobs at the local law firms, with limited experience she had to hope that someone would take her on. After a month of applying and interviewing she was able to get on with a firm. It was like a dream come true all those years of hard work paying off and she was able to help people get justice and protect those that needed it.
After a year working at the same firm she was out talking to a social worker about a case when the peace celebration was happening. She knew she should be there to support her cousin but she needed to protect the City as well. As they were leaving the dinner they were speaking at she watched the lanterns rise with a smile on her lips, until they seemed to just stop and hover. Confusion was written across her face before they caught on fire and fell to the earth. Panic set in everywhere in the city and shortly after they realized they were all trapped.
