From the moment that Lena Carmichael was born, everyone was watching her, waiting to see what she made of her life and who she would become. Lena was born daughter of Raymond Carmichael and Clarissa Davies, also known as Evermore City’s “It” couple, an actor who spent most of his time in LA and visited when he could and a model, who had taken a side track on her plans when she had discovered she was pregnant with a baby girl. Lena’s parents hadn’t been married when they had discovered they were having her which had been the source of gossip even after their beautiful baby girl was born.

Even as a young child, Lena had noticed the attention on her, the way they talked about her parents, the whispers of people around them as Lena walked hand in hand with her father down the road. Lena learned from a young age that confidence was the best way to keep those watching happy, when she did something bold, people would applaud and the young child learned to revel in that attention. The young girl from the moment she could make conversation, would speak words to the cameras of the men who followed her parents around, Lena was a little star in the making and she knew it.

As she grew older, her parents finally set a date for their ever awaited marriage and on the day of their wedding, at the age of 5, Lena, dressed in a beautiful pink dress, walked down the aisle scattering petals before her mother followed her. She clapped loudly from her seat in the crowd, enjoying the happy moment her parents shared and being spoiled like she was a princess for the entire day.

The next few years were blissful for the young family. When she became of school age, Lena was enrolled in one of Evermore’s most prestigious private schools. At school, all the other children tended to treat her same as they would anyone else. Having the chance to get away from being in the public eye was good for the young girl who could choose her own passions and focuses, without the pressure of other’s expectations. Most would have expected her to take an interest in drama or singing, anything that made her the center of attention. But young Lena Carmichael wasn’t interested in prancing on a stage in front of strangers, her passion quickly became reading. Not stories or fairy tales, but real stories, stories of real people in the world, doing real things.

Moving into her teenage years, Lena was becoming quite the talented writer herself, joining and later heading the team for her school’s newspaper, Lena enjoyed being able to tell stories in her own way and people often told her they enjoyed her pieces. Despite all appearing well on the surface, Lena’s home life however had taken a turn for the worst, her mother and father spending more and more time apart due to work, most of the time she rarely got to see them together in the same place for longer than a few minutes. Eventually the two made the difficult and emotional decision to get a divorce and start separate lives.

Lena didn’t understand what had happened to separate her mother and her father and being caught between them both was hard, she didn’t know where it would take her life, nor what she had done wrong to make them choose to abandon their family. Lena had begged her mother for the truth but there were no words. A few weeks later and the truth was finally revealed, a copy of a local tabloid showing everything of her mother and father’s lives in depth. The truth was that her mother, lonely from her husband constantly being in another city had slept with another man and upon discovering the truth, her father had called for a divorce.

Lena was angry, she was angry at her mom for betraying her dad like she did, she was angry at her father for never being around and she felt like he had abandoned her but mostly, she was angry because neither of them had the guts or respect to tell her truth, instead leaving her to read about the story which was available to the whole world. Of course, the details of her parent’s split, were now common knowledge to everyone, to the peers at Lena’s school, her teachers, everyone. Lena was humiliated and furious at her parents for the way they had handled things and she was heartbroken that the life she had lead til then would now have to end.

Throughout the time of the divorce, the only person who always seemed to understand Lena was her grandmother. Lena would often go to her place instead of going home, because it was easier than listening to her parents bicker about the future or try and make her decide between the two of them. Nana was understanding and kind and when Lena was upset she would make her a tea and they would sit and watch horror movies together, making fun of the stupid people making terrible survival decisions.

Lena turned to rebelling to get back at her parents for their lies, she would throw large parties and invite all of her friends and their friends. She tried a few drugs here and there and generally distracted herself with the only benefits she could find in being the center of public attention. The sweet young girl who used to beam at the cameras and make everyone fall  in love with her quickly became the center of a story falling apart. Lena didn’t care what the press published about her, all she wanted was for her parents to feel as bad as she did. Even when her mother moved out and Lena was only left with her father, she still wanted them to pay for the damage they had both done to her family.

Eventually however, on a night where Lena got drunk and went on a drive through the neighborhood inevitably crashing into a stop sign, the teen eventually came to realize that she had become out of control. Spending the night in a jail cell, she had been too stubborn to call her father and request bail. The story about her crash printed on the front page the next day was all that her father had needed to see however. That day, Lena had been cut off from her money, no more cars, no more drugs and no more lavish life.

Lena had spent the next few weeks trying to piece together the life she had caused to fall apart. She couch surfed with a few friends while she tried to figure out what she would do with the rest of her life. Cut off from her parent’s money, Lena’s plans of going to college were all but out the window. She felt hopeless, she regretted the things she had done and she was angry at her father for punishing her for something he had her mother had caused.

The only thing that Lena had left in her life was her school, because it was the only thing they hadn’t withdrawn from paying and so she threw herself wholeheartedly into her education, working hard on the newspaper and applying and later being voted in as student body president.Throughout her senior year she met with several colleges in regards to their writing scholarship programmes. Lena worked harder than she had ever worked to earn herself a scholarship at the University of Colorado. It hadn’t been her first choice for a school but she had earned it by herself, without needing her parent’s money and she was proud of herself.

Lena moved to Boulder a few weeks after her graduation, her scholarship and a part time job working in a bar managing to cover her for long enough that she could slowly begin to build up her savings. Lena threw everything she had into her course, working on two electorates journalism and business management. Lena was determined to prove to her parents that she wasn’t some spoiled princess who needed their money in order to stay afloat.

During her college years, Lena met another student named Taylor Garsworth, a handsome and charming man who was studying creative writing. Taylor and Lena hit it off almost immediately after their meeting. Taylor asked Lena to be his girlfriend not long into their second semester at Colorado University. Taylor understood Lena in  a way no one had before, he was supportive and the biggest and most critical fan of her work. He was her equal in so many ways and it didn’t take her long to fall head over heels for him.

College was a happy experience for Lena and it helped her to improve on skills she never knew she even had, she learned to be charismatic, how to manage a business, how to persuade and negotiate in a business context as well as how to manage people. On the other side, Lena improved her writing, managing to bring flair and passion to it, improving with every piece that she wrote. Lena was happy with her relationship, she had friends and having all but disappeared from public attention after cutting ties with her parents, she was free to live her life as she wished.

Things however changed one night when she was attending a party with Taylor in the woods. She had far too many drinks and lost track of Taylor. Being offered a ride home, she had decided to take it, sending him a text that she had decided to head out and would see him tomorrow. After that night, Taylor started acting different around her, he was easily angered and distant, he spent more time with his friends and less time with her. Lena had asked him what was wrong, begged him to share his troubles with her so she could help but instead he just continued to push her away.

Taylor however had already made his mind up about how he needed to solve his problems, telling her that he didn’t love her anymore and he was seeing someone else. Lena knew he was lying to cover up some other truth, he was pushing her away and there was nothing she could do to stop him. Taylor walked away that night and all she had been left with was a broken heart. She didn’t understand what had happened, she didn’t even know what she had done wrong to make him leave. She just didn’t understand.

Lena was left to pick up the pieces of her life. She focused herself on her writing and eventually managed to claw her way to graduation where she walked across the stage surrounded by the friends she had made. As she was packing up to leave the dorm she had called home for the past few years, a letter was delivered to Lena’s door. It was an invitation to Nana’s funeral. Eyes filling with tears, Lena had felt her legs buckle as she disbelief of what had happened set in.

A week later and Lena found herself in Evermore once more. She stayed silent at the funeral, tears in her eyes as she said goodbye to the only relative she had still held regard for. Both her parents had attended but she hadn’t spoken a word to either of them, simply paid her respects and then left. A week later she attended the will reading, she hadn’t gone in expecting anything at all, so when the lawyer read out that all of her state would go to Lena she was in utter shock, unable to even think over the uproar in the room.

It took a few weeks to process, but she was eventually signed over the deeds to her grandmother’s estate, as well as the money she was left in the will. Along with it all came a letter titled to her. Lena had sobbed while reading it, promising that she would honor her Nana’s last wishes.

My Dearest Lena,

I’m sorry I couldn’t be at your graduation. I am so proud of the person you have become and have been reading every piece of writing you have published. I wish there had been time to see you one last time but know that I loved you so much. I am in admiration of the beautiful young lady you have become.

I want you to use the money I have left you to bring your stories to the world, so that everyone can have the same smile on their face when they read them as I did.

With Love

Nana

And so that was exactly what Lena did. She started with a small freelance job in a local Evermore newspaper, writing a column which quickly raised in popularity. After several months of working on pieces she finally took the plunge and invested the money in starting her own business. It started small, a weekly newspaper which she filled with real stories of real lives in Evermore city but it quickly expanded as she brought on new writers. There were times when it was hard and she had to make difficult decisions but she loved the work she was doing and she loved telling the world stories.

A few months into her work, Lena would uncover Evermore City’s biggest secret. The truth was that humans were living among the supernatural without even knowing it. She learned about all the different factions in the city, the abundance of species that existed in their world and the ways they managed to keep their existence secret. Lena was fascinated by it all and started to publish a second version of her newspaper, one tailored only for those who were supernatural or knew of the supernatural. She enforced a strict policy meaning only those with an approved membership could purchase the paper.

As the years passed, the newspaper’s success grew and grew, she earned more money and was able to hire more and more writers to tell stories. Lena was bossy and she was even demanding at times but she cared for her staff like they were family, she did her best to guide their paths at the company and encourage young talent. By the time Lena turned 32 her company was one of the highest grossing in Evermore City and she was once again the talk of the town, this time however, it was for everything she had achieved and not who she had been born as.

Lena’s work within Evermore quickly attracted the attention of the faction system in Evermore City and she was approached by Riley Carabello, the ambassador for the human faction in Evermore City. Lena was fascinated by the work that the organization did for the humans of the city, protecting them from harm and ensuring that mass panic didn’t ensue. Lena respected Riley greatly and proposed a partnership with the organization, Lena would use her place in the media to help smooth down rumors at the same time as keeping people informed, she would take on organization members in her company to train them in writing and public relations and in return, the organization would offer Lena a seat on their privy council, a chance to influence the decisions of the city.

The deal was struck and it held for years to come, Lena was proud to be a member of the human faction in Evermore city, she would protect it with her life. Several times she had agreed to do morally grey things in order to help the organization and not a single time had she regretted doing so, she believed in the faction and she trusted them to do right by her and her company.
