Novik was born in Sioux Falls, SD to parents whose names have been long forgotten. The only person he remembers ever being there for him is his older half-brother Regio, whom he moved to London with when he was nine. The two worked in a crime syndicate to keep themselves afloat, Regio quickly rising to second-in-command and Novik hitting tenure the second he reached eighteen.

Novik himself was rather valuable, rapidly realizing that he was a berserker of sorts--when he fought (actually fought rather than just sparred), or became overly upset, his pupils distorted into slits and he lost control over his actions (usually resulting in general death and destruction of whatever was around him at the time).

A lycanthrope attack on the syndicate's base of operations resulted in the death of quite a few members, Regio included. Novik disappeared shortly after, striking out on his own with the skills he'd learned under their boss. He followed tales he'd heard from a coworker about a haven city somewhere in America, stowing away as a stray when he could and trekking when that wasn't possible.
