The moon clan was a myth long forgotten by many who were of the bloodline but it wouldn’t have mattered since Vane was orphaned at a young age and never told of the potential he had. Growing up in a orphanage didn’t lend to a happy beginning. You had to learn at a young age to fight for what you wanted whether it was food, clothing or a blanket. Granted the grown ups didn’t like it too much when you got into fight but it was all a matter of respect. You couldn’t just roll over and let someone have what was yours, that’s what Vane knew more than anything.

The oldest kid there was named Jace and he would try to take from anyone and everyone including the adults. Fighting him was an option and Vane had tried many times but gotten beaten every time, sucking up to him would have been an option but it wasn’t something Vane was good at, so instead Vane watched him, learning from him. By the time Vane was seven he could pick a lock and pick the pocket of just about anyone. For a kid of seven he was dangerous, his fighting skills left a lot to be desired but he could hold his own with other kids.

Married couples would come to the orphanage about twice a week and looked a the children. The would look at each of them like they were prized cattle and they needed to pick the best one. Sometimes a kid would actually be adopted and other times they would just be given false hope. Vane had felt the sting of that false hope more than once and so he just stopped caring. Jace began to teach Vane how to fight and how to get what he wanted increasing Vane’s skill set.

Jace’s hope of getting adopted was none existent and they both knew Jace would be aging out soon being forced out on his own. Making sure that Vane knew everything that he needed to know to survive and one morning when Vane woke up, Jace was just gone. At first Vane kind of moped around since his only friend was gone but he started school shortly after that. The subjects were easy enough but rather boring but it was better than being stuck in the orphanage all day.

History was one of his best and favorite subjects as was literature since books could take him places he didn’t believe that he would ever be able to go. He could be anything and do anything he wanted within the pages of a book and it gave him ideas of grandeur, maybe too many of them. Instead of finishing up school he decided to get out of the orphanage before he was kicked out since he knew that he was closed to aging out.

When he was dropped off at school one day he went in before turning around and slipping out. At sixteen he knew that he could survive on his own and he had been saving up some of the money he had stolen throughout the years. Jace said that Vane could look him up should he ever get out of the orphanage but Vane didn’t even know where to start so instead he decided to do his own thing.

Paying for a cheap by the week motel under the table was easy even though he was too young for most places to allow him to stay without an adult. Nor was he questioned about how he got the money which was just fine with him. The easiest way to gain money after all was just to take from others. He moved like a phantom through the streets very few people noticing him but he would take everything that he could.

For years he lived this way falling into drugs and alcohol due to the easy money he had to spend. Besides all that kept him from focusing on the turn his life had taken and how he still didn’t have anyone, everyone always left, that was his lotto. When the drugs and alcohol weren’t enough he found his way into an underground fight club. Night after night men put themselves through hell by facing off against others of the same fighting caliber.

This was where Vane ended up running into Jace, well running into was a nice way of putting it since they were matched up to face off. Jace was the current champion but he had been out of the city for a while and it was a welcome home fight. The two went blow to blow for close to fifteen minutes before Vane managed to get the upper hand and knock Jace out. Would for some friendships would have spelled out the end but for theirs it just meant that the drinks were on Jace that night. Whereas Vane got his money from stealing, Jace got it from winning fights and Vane could understand how that would be a good living due to the fights he’d won so far and the money he made.

Two days after Vane had won though Jace called him worried about something and the next day was found dead in the street. From that point on the men that ran the fights tried to act like the owned Vane since he was the current champion and threatened him should he not win or put on a good show. Not one to allow others to dictate his life Vane found an out, since he wasn’t one to roll over for others he blackmailed the very people he probably should have just run from.

With that he was forced to leave the underground fights and was always watching his back afraid he would end up like Jace. So once more he took to pick-pocketing for a living since it seemed the safer job. It was in this way that his life completely changed, as a blonde with a few others was walking by one day he skillfully ran into them and apologized as he tried to slip her wallet out of her purse. The woman was far more intelligent than he gave her credit for and grabbed his wrist.

In that moment the flesh beneath her palm began to burn as if she were seering something into his flesh and he quickly jerked his arm away looking at the strange moon like tattoo which was resting there. Confusion flooded him as he asked what she did to him. The woman said her name was Saskiah and it was better if they spoke of these things in private and those with her didn’t seem to happy about whatever it was that was going on.

Following the woman to an apartment he was lead inside where she explained to him what the symbol meant and what he was. It seemed impossible and insane but so did the idea that her mere touch caused a tattoo to form on his skin. Saskiah asked if his parents had ever explained any of this to him and he had to tell that they had died when he was young or had just left him. Her eyes seemed sympathetic and kind and something about her presence gave him an odd sense of what some might call home. He didn’t know these people and yet he felt a stronger connection to them and any in his life.

The next week was far from enjoyable as he suffered through vivid visions and life like dreams of what the moon clan had once been. Suffering was nothing new to him but to have others there to help him through it was a new feeling altogether and for the first time in his life he wanted more from life than he currently had. The pick-pocketing wasn’t something he necessarily wanted to give up but he didn’t want to live in fear anymore, watching his back afraid of when the mistakes of the past might catch up to him.

Saskiah found people to perform the spell that she said would bind him to the clan, it wouldn’t be easy or painless but it would be worth it and he believed those words. A blue light surrounded him as the spell was set into motion by the end of it all he had shifted into a Horned Owl his eyes keenly watching those around him.

Saskiah told him of how she was traveling to find as many of the long locked away moon clan as she could, he was welcome to stay with the life that he had or to follow her. Vane wasn’t much of a follower but even a blind man could see Saskiah’s leadership capability and her sense of duty to her people. Though Vane didn’t feel like he could offer her much he agreed to stay with her.

The search for others of their kind lead them many places and not all of them hospitable which meant that Vane did in fact become useful on occasion. Their small clan grew but there were still many moon shifters to be awakened.

The move to Evermore changed everything for them especially when they linked up with the Sun clan, the two clans being brought together for the first time in centuries. It wasn’t long after their arrival that the comet hit unbalancing what being built and changing it up once more the two clans able to tap into some of the strengths of the others.

When the peace treaty was signed Vane didn’t necessarily have a feeling about it one way or another but there was a difference between underground fights like he had once done and all out war within a city. It was good and benefited all the species beginning to work together and the city healing, until the day the barrier arrose.
