Jacob Green was born quite unexpectedly on I-55 in the back of a neon green van destined for a rally in Chicago. His parents had meet a little over a year earlier and, taken with each other, promptly conceived a child before realizing they couldn't stand each other's company. Robert "Bobby G" Green was a university dropout, who, after discovering charisma can only take one so far, fell in with activists (mostly because no one else would take him). However, unbeknownst to Bobby, Olivia "Oli" Shanders was a fae, an Instar Diviner. Oli had abandoned Evermore, Colorado, nearly eight years prior; compared to her family, Olivia was near talentless in magic and hoped to find more success elsewhere. Despite neither of them wanting a family, particularly not with each other, Green and Shanders settled down together in a (barely habitable) apartment in Chicago. But it was home. Robert claimed to enter sales, while Olivia boasted a teaching position; both were lying, but they provided for their son nonetheless. Jacob's sister was born when he was five. She and Jacob's mother had the fortunate benefit of a hospital, this time around.

The Green/Shanders house was anything but stable, but, ultimately, Jacob new others had it worse. His parents despised each other and were disagreeable and argumentative towards each other, but never violent. For all their faults, Bobby G Green and Oli Shanders loved their children. Oli kept her powers hidden, since sorcery would be difficult to explain if Robert ever caught her. However, Jacob recalls a number of strange occurrences. A broken toy suddenly becoming whole. The stove burning without gas. Terrible fevers vanishing, when they couldn't afford the medicine. The Green sibling where first exposed to the energy of the comet during a trip their mother's home town, Evermore, Colorado. Although Olivia had distanced herself from the Coven and magic, she hoped magic might ease the hardship they would inevitably face... Tragedy took Olivia Shanders when Jacob was thirteen. She died in a car accident. Robert was driving. Whiskey, guilt, and a bum liver took Robert Green about a year later.

In school, Jacob was always a smart kid. He had a fascination with learning, but little interest (or perhaps time, all things considered) to bother with the assignments that accompanied it. To provide for himself and his sister, Jacob turned to the streets, worked with the wrong people, learned questionable skills, but, in turn, protected his home. Unfortunately, to Jacob's sister, his brotherly intentions did not justify his decisions, and, thus, she grew distant from her brother. In the meantime, strange incident began to plague Jacob; one time, windows shattered and furniture shifted while Jacob was in a rage, another time, Jacob disappeared from the school bathroom and appeared in his bedroom by thinking about it too long. Terrified, Jacob hid these instances from his sister best he could, before, either by luck or fate, Jacob happened upon his mother's grimoire beneath a loose panel in their floor. Soon, one of Jacob's teachers noticed how these strange things transpired around Jacob. After snooping through Jacob's belongings, Mr.McHearty discovered Jacob's mother's grimoire, which confirmed his suspicions about the boy. For a time, McHearty simply watched out for Jacob - covering for unexplainable instances, sudden disappearances. But when an incident left Jacob unconscious and drooling blood, Jacob's sister called Mr.McHearty and he had to intervene.

At Seventeen, Jacob and his sister moved into an apartment, the childhood home of Mr.McHearty, in Evermore, Colorado. An envoy of the Coven met Jacob soon after and explained the real Evermore to him - the factions, Ambassadors, and the Ceremony. Jacob complied, uneasily, yet he felt drawn to the Coven and it's community. He attended his Ceremony at Twilight, on his eighteenth birthday, where, despite his love for his sister, his indifference to the pain he caused and violent nature drove him into the dark... Jacob last saw his sister the morning of her eighteenth birthday. She left and never returned to their apartment. Jacob worked like he always did, building up a reputation as a man who offered a great many services, both reputable and disreputable, civilian and supernatural.
