On a rainy Christmas day in 1998, Aiki Nakamoto-Choi gave birth to a beautiful and angelic little boy named Baekhyun Choi. Aiki and Jongho considered him their miracle baby because Aiki was sick and the doctor had said she wouldn’t be able to have children. Baekhyun was a happy baby, always cooing and making mischief everywhere he went. One of his brothers, Jace, was a whole lot older and doted on him. Except for James and Jennie. James and Jennie loved playing with him, loved giving him toys and other things.

As a toddler Baekhyun became unnaturally quiet, he didn’t play around as much and he didn’t talk either. It was like he had lost his spark. James was worried, what had happened to his normally mischievous baby brother? That all changed one day when Baekhyun returned to his normal, happy self. He never remembered that he had that moment when all was quiet and he felt like he shouldn’t talk. When he turned four, his brothers and his sister all threw a surprise birthday party for him and gave him the best present of all, their love.

Entering Primary School in Korea was a little bit exciting to little Baekhyun as he had never been to school and he wanted to have friends. He did eventually get friends, but not at first because he was painfully shy and clung onto the teacher’s hand a lot. The first few days were hard for him, he didn’t understand what the teacher was talking about, even though he was a very smart little boy. That was until he met his best friend for life, Jaehyun. Jaehyun was bubbly and mischevious, matching to Baekhyun’s normally loud and happy personality. Baekhyun and Jaehyun became fast friends and did everything together.

Baekhyun and Jaehyun’s friendship lasted until Baekhyun had to leave for America in his sixth-grade year. Jaehyun was not happy about it, and the last time Baekhyun saw Jaehyun was the day before he moved. The two boys stayed up all night, playing video games and arguing over what they should have for dinner. When they couldn’t choose, Aiki just ordered take-out and let the boys have their fun. Moving to America would prove to be the hardest for Baekhyun.

Evermore, Colorado was nothing like Busan. Snow-covered mountains and twinkling city lights welcomed him as he stepped off the plane. Evermore was also bigger than Busan, sprawling a long distance that Baekhyun couldn’t even comprehend how long it was. Several people were milling around the airport, and he remembered seeing one particular person that caught his eye. This person would later be known as Seonghwa Kang or Ace. The boy was tall and long-legged with soft brown hair and a sweet smile. Baekhyun lost sight of him after his sister Jennie tugged him out of the airport into a rental car. He forgot all about the boy once he saw his house.

Baekhyun adjusted to America and whizzed through the rest of middle school, adopting the name Tommie for his American friends. They didn’t necessarily call him that though. They called him Ayno, which Baekhyun, never understood but took on anyway. In his freshman year of high school was when he saw the boy he remembered from the airport again. It was like stepping off the plane into a new life. He was sure the boy hadn’t seen him and Baekhyun knew he looked different from three years ago. Fluffy blonde hair fell in his eyes, which were bright blue. When he was in Korea, he used to wear glasses, but his mother had decided when they got to America he would wear contacts. Since Baekhyun got lost trying to find his classes, the boy offered to help him. He introduced himself as Ace Kang and gave him a sweet smile that Baekhyun immediately fell in love with.

All throughout sophomore and junior year, Baekhyun harbored a huge crush on Ace. Ace became his new best friend and they did everything together just like Baekhyun did with Jaehyun. Baekhyun never knew until Ace asked him to prom in senior year that Ace also had a crush on him. A few months before that, Ace had invited Baekhyun to “The Azure”, an expensive bar downtown that Ace’s friends had dared him to go to. Baekhyun was incredibly grateful to Ace’s sister Tiffany for making them look like they were twenty-one because that night was the best night of his life. He was drunk, but not that drunk when Ace kissed him for the first time and told him he liked him. They always say what you say when you’re drunk is your true feelings.

That night of May 12, 2015, was the worst night in Baekhyun’s life. He and Ace had playfully been arguing over where to eat and had gotten off track of where they were walking. Ace had gone silent, and when Baekhyun turned around, he wasn’t there. Scared out of his mind, Baekhyun began looking for him. After several minutes of silence, something moved in the bushes off to his right. Curious, Baekhyun looked over and suffered a blow to his head. He fell over in pain, clutching at his temple. Ace’s screams of his name echoed throughout the night as Baekhyun tried to call back, but was swiped across his side. Pressing a hand to the slash, he came back with bright red blood gushing out. Baekhyun knew this was going to be the end, as he closed his eyes and waited for death to come.

But it didn’t. Baekhyun was saved by a lady named Kailani who had been out and about in the woods. She let him stay with her for several months, nursing him back to health. After his attack, Baekhyun had lost almost thirty pounds by not eating, but after Kailani made him eat he gained the thirty pounds back, and some muscle as well. He is still slim and still has the three diagonal scars across his left side. After he moved out of Kailani’s place, he got his own apartment and got a job as a bartender at “The Azure.” Unknown to Ace, he has seen him several times but has never gotten up the courage to go up to him. But, he will someday.
