Perceptive, cautious, and reserved, Esther can come off as a misanthrope. Indeed, there are times when she is downright judgmental. If you were to ask her, she might admit that this cynical attitude is the result of the pain that others have caused her...and that she's caused others. When she was young and not living in Evermore, she and her human boyfriend Ian Qualls uncovered a human trafficking ring run by an influential vampire gang. Her anti-human family did not approve of her boyfriend, and they were mortified when they learned that they were working with a group of self-proclaimed freedom fighters to destroy this gang.

Esther tried to convince her parents to let her make her own choices, but they were relentless in their efforts to break them up. When enough was enough, Esther confronted her parents; a heated argument ensued, and the words that she used against them would haunt her for years to come. She was disowned, and she left to live with Ian, who eventually proposed to her; they married, and Esther added Qualls to her last name. Things were fine for a while until during a raid on the vampire gang's territory Esther, Ian, and several other freedom fighters were captured.

Ian was murdered and Esther was tortured and prepared to be sold to a rich vampire client. She narrowly escaped and helped some of her group escape as well, but discovered on her way out that Ian was, in fact, not dead and had been acting as a double agent; their capture had been entirely intentional. She had the opportunity to kill him, but she could not manage to do it. Instead, she escaped and fled to Evermore, full of regret and fear. Here, she hopes to pull herself together and heal from her traumatic experience.

More importantly, though, she hopes that she can find some way of redeeming herself and finding a new purpose for her life. Her last names serve as a daily reminder of the painful experiences she's gone through--Donovan of the family that had shunned her and Qualls of the man who had betrayed her. But she keeps both names as a constant reminder that she shouldn't trust people too easily and that even the most beautiful relationships must come to a bitter end.
