The Farley family lines could be traced back hundred of years, finding their beginning long ago when the northern provinces of Canada were first settled. Leaving their original home over in Europe, they came over and immediately moved west with a small number of other settlers. Times were hard at first as the new immigrants struggled to establish a town in the mountains. The fought to reach some form of peace with the local natives that have lived in the area for as long as could be remembered. Nothing was easy at first, people died from illness, battles, and injuries. Eventually, however, a small town formed and peace was made with the aboriginals and calm settled.
The Farleys established one of the first large cattle farms in the area. They were soon known all across the country for their beef and also for the livestock raised on the farm. They also took on breeding and raising horses, training and selling to buyers everywhere. The years passed and the family grew. With each new generation, they were taught the ways of the Nephilim and taught all about their family history so that they would never forget. Between learning about their family history and about what Nephilims were, the children were also taught valuable fighting skills. Decades passed, the town grew into a city, the province of British Columbia was formed, and the family farm remained unchanging. The cattle business proved profitable even as the times passed, and raising quality horses also managed to pay for itself. The farm grew to hold the larger number of family members and eventually other Nephilim heard of the Farley family, moving to the area to fall under the protection of the family name, forming a coven.
Stephanie was born on a hot and humid summer day. Her piercing, bright blue eyes were wide and curious from day one, her mood quiet and solemn. For the longest time family worried that there was something off about the little baby girl but it soon became clear that that was just how she was. As she grew, like all the children in the family, Stephanie was taught the history of the Nephilim species and of her family name. Around the age of 5 her other training began. The quiet little girl soon became skilled in various fighting styles as well as fighting with different weapons and on top of all that also passed all schooling with ease. The young girl knew her family wanted her to stick around and help run the farm like everyone else in the family had Stephanie was torn though, she loved the horses, the training, and the skill building, but she also knew that she wanted more out of life.
The beautiful flaxen-haired child with sky blue eyes grew up into a young woman and graduated her high school class with honors in sciences, english, math, and physics. She received offers from multiple prestigious schools across Canada and several in the US. It was when she received a full scholarship to attend veterinary school, that the now 18 year old knew she couldn’t pass it up. Her family accepted this path for their daughter and despite their reservations, they were happy for her. No other member of their family had left the province to live elsewhere before, let alone the country. They were excited for her but also sad that they hadn’t been able to provide her with a life that she was content with. Steph assured her parents that the life she had grown up knowing was a perfect life. She wanted an education though and she wanted to get out there and explore, experience new things.
Packing up her life, Stephanie moved down to Colorado to attend University. The years seemed to fly by as she worked to become a vet. She decided she wanted to become both a large and small animal vet, rather than specialize in just one or the other. It added extra years onto her schooling but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. Somehow, around all her schooling the young Nephilim maintained top grades, worked a part time job, and had a social life. She even had a boyfriend for several years. Doug was her first real boyfriend that she had had and Stephanie loved him and he loved her. It seemed like her future was set; a great career in the making and the boyfriend any girl could ever dream of.
It was a year before her graduation when tragedy struck. Doug was an adamant skier and one weekend, while out with his friends skiing the backcountry they were all caught in an avalanche. Stephanie knew the moment he didn’t come home on Sunday what had happened. She got the news that his body had been found three days later. Her and Doug’s family held a memorial for him the next weekend and she did her best to move on from the love of her life but it wasn’t easy. Her final year seemed to pass as if she was moving through quicksand. She maintained her grades, but the once bright and vibrant young woman was back to her quiet, sullen ways of her childhood. She pushed away those she had been close with and focussed solely on her studies and her part time job.
For her final 6 months of schooling, she was assigned to work alongside a full veterinarian. Connor was a handsome young man, charming and successful in every way. Stephanie finally awoke inside a little when she was with him, laughing and actually enjoying herself again. He taught her everything that a textbook and in class practicing couldn’t. She learned so much in her time with him, learning skills and hacks that she would have never been taught in the class room. It was after her time with him that she definitely knew she had made the right career choice for herself. On their final shift together they decided to grab an early morning breakfast and coffee. They talked for hours despite lack of sleep and when they left he kissed her. Stephanie didn’t know what to do, she felt like she was betraying Doug but her heart told her that moving on was the right thing to do.
She panicked and went home without saying anything. She had graduation ceremonies the next day and she had so much to do before she was ready. Graduation day was amazing. Stephanie’s family came down to watch her and Connor was also there, introducing himself to her family and proving he was a true gentleman. Stephanie decided then she wanted to see where things went with him. Life, however, had other plans. Stephanie was at her home, on her phone with Connor when suddenly she was in pain. Pain was everywhere and it was like nothing she had ever felt before in her life. It was only a few short moments before she passed out from the pain, still hearing Connors voice calling out to her from the forgotten phone beside her hand.
She awoke several hours later, lying on the couch with her head in Connor’s lap. She blinked looking up at him confused. She had no idea what had happened and she was frightened. Connor was a human but he also knew what she was. He knew about Nephilims, Vampires, and all the other species that roamed the earth that so many humans were naive to. He told her about a city he had heard about, a city where all the species lived in peace, where factions had lived for generations. He told her that she should go there to find her answers. Stephanie didn’t know what to do. She had been ready to start a life in Colorado with Connor, to see where things would go. But it seemed like life had other plans for her.
She packed up her life in Colorado, purchasing a small house on the outskirts of Evermore City and made the move. She had saved up money from her job for the last 8 years as well as from jobs she had held when she was a teenager still living. She used her money to buy the house and to purchase everything she would need to open up a small veterinary practice in the basement of her home. She bought permits, licenses, and everything else she would need. Thanks to Connor sharing her name and experience, she had some of the local vets help her out and also get her name out there. She arrived in Evermore and was ready to get answer to her questions and to start a new life….
