Being back to the place that he had grown to call home came with a new set of challenges. He left a lot of people behind with very little to no words. He knew most wouldn’t blame him after all word of your family's death can shake even the most logical person to their core. So when it came to getting his world set back up he knew he would have to make some apologies. Jae was one of them. He left in the middle of training him. Their contect had been almost nonexistent.

Donovan showed up at the Dojo using the back entrance wanting to not make a show of his return. He figured this would be the best place to catch Jae would be the Dojo if he continued his training. Catching out the corner of his eye the young dhampir he took under his wing he smirked. Moving over to him, in a playful manner Donovan pushed Jae to the wall and had his dagger from his hand. “Remember how to get out of this?” He asked in a joking manner.

He chuckled and pressed his lips together “I guess you don’t realize how lucky you are when you’re raised with freedom, most kids I grew up alongside weren’t even allowed to choose their own careers” honestly it had almost gone that way for Jae too, his father had always been very selective and opinionated when it came to his children. He nodded slightly “Even that can be challenging, it’s normal to want others to approve of your choices” and to purposely go against them felt even more wrong.

Jae couldn’t hide the smile on his lips, the idea of being someone’s family and someone saying it with such pride was almost foreign “I’ll do my best not to let you down” he wanted to be someone here in Evermore and he wanted to carve his own direction. Jae laughed when the other male started playing the part of a zombie, shaking his head playfully “That has to be the one legend I’m really glad isn’t true” everything else supernatural seemed to exist, but not zombies.

Jae smiled, journals had always been a good way for him to express his creativity and get everything down on paper when he wasn’t sure how to process what he was thinking “I think I’ve got a long way to go before I’m writing any hits but…thanks” he nudged into his side slightly where his arm was around him “I’ll make sure to bring an autographed copy to your future concert” he teased implying the other male could be just as successful.

Jae raised his brows a little surprised “Really?” he wasn’t really used to kindness if he was honest, he was used to struggling by himself for most things “I won’t abuse it too much” he commented and press his lips together to stifle his grin. Jae turned towards him, noticing the sad air and offered a comforting expression, gently reaching to squeeze the other male’s shoulder “As hard as things are, no one would want you to be sad forever, so it’s okay to try and find things that make you happy now” he was sure that’s what his loved ones would want.

Donovan recalled how lucky he was that his family allowed him to roam the world and travel and learn. He knew others had middle lives compared to that, some freedoms, some strict lives. Yet those who get no chance to choose the life path they get to take makes his heart ache. He wished he could take them all in and offer them the chance to follow their dreams. “It seems the factor we feel we have to live for others to approve of because if they don't, how would we know we are doing the right thing then when we should focus on being happy with ourselves. Instead of making others happy. That is just a dark road for all of us.” It was something that many had found themselves in therapy over. The need for others to approve.

With an easy smirk on his face he patted the young man’s shoulder once again. “Only way you could let me down, kid, is if you didn’t live for yourself. Follow your passions, come to me if you need my help, be happy, don’t be too hard on yourself.” Donovan was a man of passion, he knew one or two things about following his passions, he could honestly say he didn’t regret much in his life. A fact he was rather proud of. He stopped pretending to be a zombie for a moment and then raised his hand to his chin, rubbing it gently. “Can we truly say Zombies don’t exist? Or have we just not come across them. They could honestly be like that show that came out. iZombie.” He chuckled at the thought of one in the city morgue without any of them knowing.

“Beauty kid, you have time.” He smiled at the thought of how many years he had sunk into perfecting the talents he had gained in his lifetime. “A blessing not many have really.” Something often thought about when it comes to humans is how some of them truly just throw themselves into their passions and dreams because they lived a finite amount of time compared to other species. “I look forward to that day.” He laughed rubbing his side as Jae nudged, he had grown in skill and strength that was for sure since the last time they had been training together, or he was just getting old.

Donovan hadn’t realized he had slipped into a depressed state for that moment. His hand came to Jaes offering a gentle pat to it. “Yeah, right now I am still very much burying myself in distractions, Using the emotions for some songs. Figuring focusing on work and music was the best way to get through things. Avoid throwing myself into a whole situationship since I messed all that up.” He laughed softly, thankful Argent didn’t hate him and wanted to be his friend still. “I will figure it all out with the time I am blessed with. For now, being a leader this faction needs is foremost besides the club.” his face turned determined as he stood up.

Jae pressed his lips together and nodded “It’s pretty easy to say you should only care about yourself but..” easier said than done right? “I care about what the people I care about think…” and despite the fact that at time his family could be strict and even perhaps toxic, he couldn’t help but want to be good in their eyes. The young dhampir smiled just a little and nodded when Donovan patted his shoulder “I don’t really have the first idea about chasing dreams but…I’m trying” he was still young, there was room to make mistakes and figure things out “Have you followed your dreams?” he questioned curiously.

Jae pulled a face when the elder male pointed out that zombies could possibly exist “I think I’d rather convince myself they don’t” he mumbled under his breath “The last thing we need is zombies who can’t be reasoned with running around here, species that can be reasoned with are trouble enough” Jae had made sure to do his homework on all the species that resided in Evermore in order to be prepared should he need to protect humans.

He nodded slightly when Donovan pointed out that they had the luxury of time where others didn’t “I’m guessing that means your switch is on” he mumbled softly, Jae had never switched his, currently he was aging the same as any human and honestly he was hesitant to do so, picking what age you wanted to stay for an extended time was…challenging, especially at his age where a lot of people didn’t take him seriously.

Jae bit his lip softly as he listened to the other male talk “If one’s thing for sure, you shouldn’t rush anything, especially when you’re feeling emotional” Jae had made a habit in the past of making snap decisions off the back of his own impatience “I’m trying to get better at that, things just move so quickly if you don’t apply the brakes…you know” and Jae was good at getting himself thrown into situations like that. Perhaps because he was curious about anything and everything which meant he couldn’t stay quiet.

“Have you thought about franchising, or is one bar enough for your sanity”

"Well, that’s different in some sense. Yes, you should care to a safe degree about what the people you care about think of you. But if they care about you in return, they'll see how hard you've worked to get where you are. Think about how you view them. Are you harsh and dismissive, or do you understand that mistakes are part of life? Do you see how hard they’re working and want to be to them what they are to you?" Donovan gave his best dad-like expression as he shared this wisdom with the young dhampir. "But when it comes to family, sometimes maintaining that healthy distance is needed to keep from driving yourself insane." A weak smile touched his lips.

A faraway look took over his face. "I like to think I've worked toward a lot of those dreams I had—have. But we also have the benefit of time, unlike humans, so we can often push dreams off or move at a slower pace. We don’t have that looming expiration date causing stress and making failure seem scarier. I’ve failed ten times more than I care to admit." He shrugged. "We also have the time to spend planning every single detail." That was how his weather was, never making a move without considering all the outcomes.

He laughed easily and pointed out, "I would go off the movie idea of zombies if I were you. I mean, what species is exactly how it's portrayed in the media? Maybe the zombies are more iZombie than The Walking Dead. It makes you want to learn what’s real and what’s just cinematic conjuration." He paused for a moment. "Are you having trouble with another species?" he inquired, checking in on him.

"What can I say? I was vain and wanted to stay pretty," he said, patting his cheeks. "You’re still young, though. You have plenty of time to choose when to flip that switch. Most go between 25-45 because it’s the easiest age to flex when needed." He remembered something his mother would say to him and his sisters. "Only you will know when it’s right. Only you can feel when it’s right." It was like her smile was on his own lips as he stared off into the distance.

"Trust me, I’ve made enough snap decisions in my life that have left their marks." The feeling of the world spinning so fast that the brakes broke a few miles back with no chance of stopping kind of marks. Yet the stop always comes, sometimes concrete, others like jello. "I know, gods, I know. I could tell you some stories where my brakes failed me because of curiosity and, you know, alcohol."

He thought for a moment. "Honestly? The bar is enough for me. Maybe in the future, or if I need new ventures or money, I’d look into it." He shrugged again, clearly not having thought much about it. "Right now, I feel like I’m learning to breathe again, not falling into past mistakes and going slow. Besides, I couldn’t grace every club with myself every night if I had more than one. That would be a real tragedy," he said, letting his cocky nature show.
