There had been many old Vampire and Dhampir families, well known and secretive. Keeping their species, a secret from the outside world, to humans. The Hendrix family was a family that was known in the Dhampir community and Donovan was the youngest child to James and Anna Hendrix, who had an older sister and brother to look up to.
Soon after Donovan was born they had moved away from where they lived to a more quiet and smaller village far from the city and Dhampir community. His parents thought that it would be better if they brought up their children away from all of the drama and chaos of the supernatural. To give them a somewhat normal life. Hiding what they were to their children until they were old enough to understand it all. As Donovan grew up he confused by how his parents barely aged, he thought it may had been that they look like they don’t age.
His siblings too kept the truth from him. Donovan had stumbled upon a book that he found in his parents bedroom that they had kept in a box along with some other stuff. He didn’t know what all this stuff was and meant, he was looking for a toy car he had lost. Opening up the book the young child briefly read it, the book was about a species called Dhampirs. Donovan thought it was just a book that his parents had and read for them at bedtime unaware that everything that was said and written in the book was real and not just make believe.
Year had past from first discovering the book, Donovan had already read page to page of the book. Having to read it in secret without his parents knowing, he knew that they would be angry at him for snooping around in their rooms. He didn’t really want to be grounded again. Donovan was walking back from his friends house, he was around the age of 10 or so at the time. When he was walking back he took a shortcut instead of taking the longer route. Donovan was hurrying back home since he had left later than he should have, his parents would be worried of his whereabouts.
He stopped in his steps, his heart jumped missing a beat as he saw what was in front of him. A burning man. Donovan didn’t know what to do it was like he was frozen. He was just a kid, a poor, defensive kid. He screamed loudly as he turned to run away as fast as he could but this creature was faster than him, seconds later the fire bird like creature flew up in the sky and landed in front of him. Seconds later he felt a burning and excruciating pain, his flesh on was burning. He had been attacked. He didn’t really remember what happened next, it was all so sudden. His parents however came at the right moment and saved him from the phoenix, protecting their son. They had knocked Donovan out for a little while so that they could take him back home.
His parents tried their best to heal Donovan’s wound that the Phoenix inflicted on him, it did seal it although it left a long scar from his neck down to his lower chest. After that night his parents came clean to Donovan and his siblings, it was time that they knew the truth about themselves, what they were and where they came from. Donovan had learnt that everything that he had read in his parents book was real and that he was a Dhampir like his family. The family packed their bags and belongings to move back to where his parents grew up and used to live before everything.
After moving to California, everything was different to what they were used to. He spend years learning about Dhampir’s and trying to settle into his new life. The weapon claiming ceremony was something he had been looking forward to ever since finding out about it when his parents had told him and his siblings. He was the last of the three Andrews’s siblings to choose their affinity weapon as he was the youngest. He had handled and trained with a lot of weapons since the age of 15, so that he could be good at most weaponry. On the day of his 18 birthday and the day of the claiming ceremony his family, friends and other Dhampir members all gathered to see him claim his weapon. Donovan handled each weapon that the Dhampirs had and all trained with until he found the one he was destined for. The one that stood out the most and felt most drawn to was the bladed tonfa. It emitted a beautiful teal colour with runes and Donovan knew that it was the weapon that had claimed him. After the claiming ceremony he had spent years training in combat and in weaponry learning all about the runes and casting of them.
Donovan and his sister Ayra had gotten into an argument over her going on an unconfirmed mission, she had been gone for days on end without a word. They would have used a tracking rune although somehow she had managed to block it probably with some help from an Instar Diviner. She came back covered with scratches, bruises and covered in blood that wasn’t her’s. They argued over how she went on a mission without speaking to their parents or the elders and leader members. She called him uptight and one who always followed rules and never broke any. That he couldn’t live a little. He stormed off and headed to the nearest bar for a drink. To forget about all that had happened between him and his sister just prior. He knew that something right. When he arrived back home he knew something wasn’t right from when he stepped through the door. Normally there would be the radio or tv playing in the background whilst his mother was cooking. As he walked into the living room he saw his mother crying whilst his dad and brother sat with her, they looked sad as well. Ayra was missing. His world then came crashing down. She had left her home in a fit of anger never to look back
Years had passed since Ayra’s going away, Donovan blamed himself for what had happened. His parents told him that it was no one's’ fault, there was nothing that could have been done to change the past. Donovan closed himself off, focusing on his training and practicing his runes. He would spend a lot of his time in the Dhampir dojo or training places. His parents thought that it would be good idea for Donovan to leave and do some travelling. He was in his early 30’s when he left his family behind to go to do some travelling. It was during his time in Italy that he met a woman named Valeria and they became good friends and when they both left to travel again, she to Russia and he to Australia, they decided to keep in touch. It was some years later that he got a call from her, inviting her to this place called Evermore where she had made her permanent residence and decided to travel there not knowing how this one decision would change his life forever.
